MILL VALLEY, Calif. (KCBS) -- Once a darling of the Marin County good life, high-end garden retailer Smith and Hawken will go out of business by the end of the year. Liquidation is already underway at the company's six Bay Area stores.

I found this out when I tried to go on their site the other day. Apparently Miracle-Grow or someone bought them out - too much leveraged debt to survive in the economy?
Too bad...they had some nice things although I didn’t shop there a lot.
Get ready for more of this. I sell software to the retail industry, they are getting killed this year. Expect to see many store closings, mall closings, etc. Consumers are going to be very surprised when their neighborhood retail stores start going under.
This is about 4 day old news, but I could not find it on a search. If it has already been posted, feel free to pull.
Obama’s fault
The hottest business in towns across America is the one selling the plywood to cover the windows.
I received word via an email from the company this morning. Like you, we did not shop there often, but I loved their stuff, and DH is a big yard guy, so I could always count on them for the neatest stuff for Christmas, and birthday time.
I’m not surprised they are going out of business. For having such a high end line of tools, at one time, to start selling at Target, indicated they were in trouble.
I go for a real agricultural supplier Gempler’s.
The enlightened, Obama-voting commies at Smith and Hawken are going TU??
Wonder how those conservative voting neanderthals at Smith and Wesson are doing these days?
Yet uber liberal Paul Hawken will continue to vote for socialism.....
Ours already have. It started here with a brand spankin’ new, replacement Circuit City going belly up within a month of O’s swearing in...
More green shoots? Who pulled the trigger?
It is a shame. My husband, the gardener, bought some of their pieces (not too many, who could afford it?). Really lovely, high quality items.
Several high end home/garden businesses, like Home Depot’s Expo, also went out of business with the downturn.
You should do a search on Smith Hawken out of business. It is incredible how they are eating their own. Most of the articles I found, were written with the slant that the reason they failed, was because they had sold out to Scott’s... and most commentary was from Lib’s who felt they deserved it, for going for the bucks, and “abandoning” the organic gardener, shakes head.
Didn’t Target carry Smith & Hawken?

Yup. You can be sure he can afford to. Too bad for those who cannot though.
