A woman found dead in a skyscraper where a cleaning woman had vanished days earlier was bound and gagged and had a gold crucifix taped to her mouth, police said Sunday.
Police searching for the missing cleaning woman at a building near the World Trade Center site found the body on Saturday after discovering blood leaking from a ventilation shaft, top police spokesman Paul Browne said.
The body hadn't been identified, but police presumed it was that of Eridania Rodriguez, who hasn't been seen since her work shift Tuesday at the 26-story Manhattan tower. Rodriguez' street clothes and other belongings were found in her locker, and video surveillance didn't show her leaving the building.
An autopsy Sunday determined the dead woman, found in a 12th-floor air-conditioning duct, was asphyxiated by tape applied to her head and face, medical examiner's office spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said.
The woman's hands were tied behind her back, and her feet and mouth were bound, Browne said. The crucifix was dangling by the woman's mouth, Browne said, but it was unclear whether the necklace had been caught underneath the tape.
"We haven't determined whether the crucifix ended up there incidentally or intentionally," he said.
The woman was wearing a work shirt and sweatpants and had suffered a head wound, Browne said. Her shoes were found elsewhere in the air-conditioning duct, he said.
Rodriguez, 46, was the sister of professional bodybuilder Victor Martinez. She was a native of the Dominican Republic who lived in upper Manhattan and was married with several children.
She made her last appearance on security videotape at the skyscraper about 7 p.m. Tuesday. Her cleaning cart was found on the eighth floor.

Right off I would assume she witnessed something inadvertantly, and was murdered to shut her up.

If that was the case, killing her immediately would have been safer. No, I think she was raped and then murdered.
I suspect this will be solved fairly quickly.
He was moved off her floor but she told her family she saw him lurking again one night recently.
Poor woman. Even if he was fired or she quit, sooner or later that nutball would have gotten her.
Thoughts with Victor and his family...VM is a standup guy in the Bodybuilding community....this makes his career crippling injury before Mr.O last year pale in comparison.

The poor woman. Years ago, I used to work a night shift in one of the old WTC buildings, which were very empty and very creepy at night. I worked in an office and I always felt bad for the cleaning employees, who were virtually all women, and had to go from one remote place to another with no contact with anyone in a central location. Prayers for Eridania.

Barbara Alice Wise was a 48-year-old United States Department of Commerce employee who was found dead in her fourth-floor office Nov. 29, 1996, at Commerce’s International Trade Administration under unexplained circumstances, leaving her co-workers and many other employees in the huge downtown office building concerned and upset. Wise, of the 900 block of Falls Circle Way in Gambrills, was last seen at work at 4 p.m. Wednesday, just before employees left for the Thanksgiving holiday..
Although investigators found bruises on her body, a D.C. police investigator said there was no outward sign of any cause of death. In addition, Sgt. Michael J. Farish, of the police homicide unit, said no obvious signs of foul play were found in Wise’s office.
Wise was employed in the same section of the Commerce Department which was the focus of illegal foreign fundraising.It was suggested that a cover-up involving Ron Brown’s death, as with the death of Wise, was due to a deliberate attempt by Attorney General Janet Reno in order to safe-guard the President, who was becoming increasingly under scrutiny for dubious campaign donations which originated with John Huang while he was a ranking member of the Commerce Department and visiting the Chinese Embassay as well as the Chinese Ambassador’s residence in Washington, D.C.. Wise reportedly worked in the same section as Huang.
11/30/96 AP - A Commerce Department employee was found dead in her fourth-floor office at the agency’s downtown headquarters on Friday. The body was discovered around 7:45 a.m. by a co-worker arriving for work, police said. The woman was identified as Barbara Alice Wise, 48, of Gambrills, Md. She had worked as a secretary for 14 years at the department’s International Trade Administration. Anne Luzzatto, chief spokeswoman for Commerce Secretary Mickey Kantor, said the unit where she worked provided analysis for various industries in studies designed to boost export sales…..
