WASHINGTON – Former CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden angrily struck back Saturday at assertions the Bush administration's post-9/11 surveillance program was more far-reaching than imagined and was largely concealed from congressional overseers.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Hayden maintained that top members of Congress were kept well-informed all along the way, notwithstanding protests from some that they were kept in the dark.

"One of the points I had in every one of the briefings was to make sure they understood the scope of our activity 'They've got to know this is bigger than a bread box,' I said," said Hayden, who also previously headed the National Security Agency.

"At the political level this had support," said the one-time CIA chief, ...

...

Hayden, who in 2001 designed and carried out the secret program, told The AP he is distressed by suggestions that Congress was not fully informed. He said that he personally briefed top lawmakers on the entire surveillance operation and said he felt that they supported it.

Some people don’t take too kindly to being slandered. Most Republicans don’t mind, but some people do.

A good rule of thumb—tape record all conversations with thugs, criminals and other political types.

Have met and worked with Mike Hayden and he is an honest man. One of the best. Godspeed in dealing with the voracious partisan fools who make up our Congess, General.

Screw the GOP! I'm done with them, unless we can take that party back and purge the RINOs.

As for the General, he needs to slap the crap out the lying libs. (Of course, if he did, there'd nothing left but their shirt and shoes.)

The Rule or Ruin, Treasonous democrat party in all its ugly glory has willed for itself nothing but total destruction. They have brought the nation to the brink of revolution and it is all the more likely to occur with every passing hour. Civilization will spread westward away from our shores, our descendants will be meaner, poorer and fragmented in power and stability. The final vestiges of our Grand Nation will have died by villainy, corruption, greed and idiocy.

I agree! I would also make a copy of every incoming and outgoing letter. But wasn’t the taping what got Nixon in trouble, you know, Watergate?

He didn't realize these people are STUPID and don't understand anything that doesn't come with a TAX HIKE!

Dear Michael.....your first mistake was to think they are SMART.

the former leaders who are well regarded must refute these ridiculous charges coming from the Dems - all of Bush's team must speak out.

I love to hear someone speak out and correct the record. Unfortunately, the lame-stream media will not report this and the average voter will think that the poor, innocent Congress was lied to. Regardless, it is good to see someone stand up and speak the truth (although Palin has received a lot of criticism for doing so strangley enough).

IF the program was USELESS, then WHY the continued secrecy????

Could SOME reporter (a high-school stringer would do) ask this question of the Obama administration? Or is the the ENTIRE Press Corps dead?

By the time the Congress gets through we wont have a CIA. At least not one that is worth a damn. Is that their true purpose?

Its strange that we get an Un-American President, and the Democrat party joins him in all he does to destroy this country.

What's strange about? Par for the course, I would say.

I hope he kept records and recordings. Unethical people in Congress will throw any Republican under the bus in a heartbeat, and are looking for information all the time in order to do this....

What the democrats are doing in this case proves once again that they are treacherous. Cheney was right to not trust them at all. Look where this story appeared. The democrat rag.

There was quite a bit of info available on the web....and there were plenty of folks who knew exactly what was going on. I forgot what I searched before but it sure told a lot. This drip, drip right now is a farce....
