GOP risks loss of respect if it goes after Sotomayor (The GOP has nothing to lose.)

WASHINGTON — Republicans may have a window of opportunity to turn public opinion against President Barack Obama's first Supreme Court nominee, but a new poll finds that such a campaign could hurt their party's already weak standing with Americans, especially Hispanics, the nation's fastest-growing voter group.

Fully 55 percent of Americans said they hadn't yet heard enough about Sonia Sotomayor to have an opinion of her, according to a new McClatchy-Ipsos poll. That could be the opportunity that Republicans can exploit by attacking her. Even so, 54 percent said the Senate should confirm her, while only 21 percent said it should not, and one in four Americans isn't yet sure.

However, the poll revealed a danger for Republicans: 37 percent of the general population and 42 percent of Hispanics said they'd feel less favorably toward the Republican Party if Senate Republicans "overwhelmingly oppose" Sotomayor, 54, a Latina federal appellate judge from New York.

A much smaller number — 24 percent of the general population and 20 percent of Hispanics — said that organized GOP opposition would endear Republicans to them.

Obama, a Democrat whose party controls Congress, nominated Sotomayor on May 26. The survey of 1,000 general-population adults was conducted June 4-8 and had an error margin of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. The poll of 505 Hispanic adults was taken May 28-June 8 and had an error margin of plus or minus 4.36 percentage points.

Some Republicans are weighing whether to mount a filibuster to block Sotomayor's Senate confirmation, and many of them want to delay her confirmation hearings, which are set to start on July 13.

The Senate Judiciary Committee's top Republican, Jeff Sessions of Alabama, and five other senators wrote a letter Wednesday seeking more time to vet her, and additional documents related to her past...

Let everybody know what Sotomayor defended, New York's tyrannical laws against self defense:

http://www.nraila.org/media/PDFs/litigation/NRAAmicusFinal.pdf

Check this footnote at the bottom of the amicus' page 20, 32 of 48 on my pdf page counter.

7. In addition to the 44 States that expressly protect a right to bear arms in their constitutions, three other States protect a right to self-defense and defense of property. CAL. CONST. art. I, § 1 (originally adopted in 1849); IOWA CONST. art. I, § 1 (originally adopted in 1846); N.J. CONST. art. I, ¶ 1 (originally adopted in 1844). As the Court has noted, “the inherent right of self-defense has been central to the Second Amendment right.” Heller, 128 S. Ct. at 2817. Only Maryland, Minnesota, and New York have neither guarantee in their state constitutions.

She has no problems with laws against self defense in your home! Tell that to her Latin sisters and brothers.

The GOP risks loss of its existence if it does not.

The GOP lost respect when it nominated McRino as its presidential nominee last year.

Yeah.

And America should have taken tips on military strategy from the NAZIs during WWII.

How touching and ironic it is when mass media, so instrumental in trouncing the GOP and getting Obama elected, shows concern for the GOP’s survival.

How can 55% of them “not heard enough about her” yet 54% want her confirmed? Something smells. At the very least the dem’s media buddies are showing us what we should do by warning us against it. Yeah, by all means don’t do your job by asking probing questions, just give her a free ride like they did that other minority Clarence Thomas...oh wait!

Again the GOP being “warned” on trying to speak out against one of Obama’s uber liberal nominees. Funny how the libs don’t have that trouble..

They destroy a nominee professionally and personally and no one in the media says a word. The GOP opposes someone on principle and their the bad guys....Well...SAY GOOD NIGHT TO THE BAD GUYS.

Any GOP member that doesn’t will have ALOT to answer for in the next election. I hope my fellow South Carolinians have the sense to send Grahamnesty packing at the first chance.

Well it certainly didn't bother the Democrats when President Bush nominated Miguel Estrada...

The same 55% that hasn’t heard of her is probably the same 54% that think she should be confirmed. This is probably also the same 55% the voted for Obama w/o knowing anything substantive about him. And Thomas was not a wise Black man enriched by experiences growing up in the Bronx, he was just an Uncle Tom type.

Because, gee whiz, it's worked so well up until now.

The GOP should start following principles and abandon pandering to *anyone*.
