Mark Steyn: Warm-mongers prefer you in poverty
Orange County Register ^ | July 11 2009 | Mark Steyn

According to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, we only have 96 months left to save the planet.

I'm impressed. 96 months. Not 95. Not 97. July 2017. Put it in your diary. Usually the warm-mongers stick to the same old drone that we only have 10 years left to save the planet. Nice round number. Al Gore said we only have 10 years left three-and-a-half years ago, which makes him technically more of a pessimist than the Prince of Wales. Al's betting Armageddon kicks in January 2016 – unless he's just peddling glib generalities. And, alas, even a prophet of the ecopalypse as precise as His Royal Highness is sometimes prone to this airy-fairy 10-year shtick: In April, Prince Charles predicted that the red squirrel would be extinct "within 10 years," which suggests that, while it may be curtains for man and all his wretched works come summer of 2017, the poor doomed red squirrel will have the best part of two years to frolic and gambol on a ruined landscape.

As I've said:

Green is the new Red
And just like the old Red
It's all about The Green.

And “ecopalypse”! LOL!

Steyn is just amazing. I’ve often said I wished I could write 1/10th as well.

If you were a 19th century Russian peasant, and you got to Ellis Island, you’d be living in a tenement on the Lower East Side, but your kids would get an education and move uptown, and your grandkids would be doctors and accountants in Westchester County. And your great-grandchild would be a Harvard-educated environmental activist demanding an end to all this electricity and indoor toilets.

Yes, that was my favorite part as well. So true and so sad.

A new Steyn classic. Thank goodness he dropped out of high school before someone tried to teach him how to write!

one thing these guys never mention is that in the poorest of countries where energy is least used, the sewage is piled up to the point where it makes a New Jersey landfill look like a small pile of cat turds.

He then got in his limo and was driven to his other palace.

The purpose of limousine liberalism is to deflect envy. It's a strategy the ultra-rich use to keep their wealth and enjoy it openly without threat. It works wonderfully which is why they do it.

"Capitalism and consumerism have brought the world to the brink of economic and environmental collapse, the Prince of Wales has warned. … And in a searing indictment on capitalist society, Charles said we can no longer afford consumerism and that the 'age of convenience' was over."

He then got in his limo and was driven to his other palace.

Reminds me of Al Gore touring the world promoting An In convenient Truth...in his private jet...Or preaching about "Earth Day" and turning off all of your lights while his mansion is lit up like a Christmas tree -- spotlights on the trees lining his drive blaring...

The enviro Nazi's, along with all of the control-freak elites, are total hypocrites. They live by the adage of "do as I say, not as I do." The "rules" do not apply to the ruling class...A perfect example of this is how they'd be exempt from ZeroCare.....Everyone MUST have insurance thru ZeroCare, or else pay huge fines and penalties...except for us Elites of course....

Me too. But to write that well, one must think that well. I’m not even in the same ball park.

How times change. I remember seeing in a history book years ago a political cartoon from the late 1800s. It showed side-by-side comparisons between what the vote for one party would mean for Americans and what it would mean to vote for the other. One cartoon had healthy-looking Americans jamming food down their gullets with smokestacks spewing out clouds of smoke to show that if one voted for their party, you would be eating well amidst a booming economy. The other cartoon showed dismal, starving Americans and smokestacks not spewing out clouds of smoke. That's if you voted for the wrong party.

Today, the doomists would have us believe the second panel with no busy smokestacks is the way to go. In short, "poverty is good for you" is now the left's slogan. Hey everybody, let's all go back to the stone age! (smirk)

Every article of Mark Steyn’s I’ve read is great, well written and filled with wit. The man is a world treasure and he shows the pip squeaks of the left are idiots.

And I remember back in the mid-1980s it was Ted Danson telling us we had 10 years to save the oceans...again, the number 10.

He is indeed a treasure.

I love the way he handles the lib callers on Rush's show too. The one on thursday that started out saying that Obama was too moderate was a great example. By the end he was telling the caller to just hang in there and that Obama would get him to his promised land, just by several steps and using language that the caller did not approve of. It was a classic.

So many good lines in this piece, but I loved that one.
