I'd like to meet those people who are not sure whether or not they are officers of a company or business. That is, if they actually have their feet on the ground.

I have a sole proprietorship. What is my wife's status?

I did the survey also. I don’t remember how I got registered. This is the first new one in a couple of months. There should be a link somewhere on that site to become a “Zogby participant.”
Does she work in your business? If so, what is her job title?
She does not work in the business, and the business assigns her no job title.
What is her status vis-a-vis the business, which is a sole proprietorship that I established and list myself as the proprietor?

ST,
Does your business have officers? In my experience, most sole proprietorships don’t. But when they do, the officers know who they are.
If you have made your wife an officer, I guess that’s a romantic thing to do. But keeping it a secret from her probably isnt.
My understanding is that “officers” of a sole proprietorship don't have the legal status of officers of a corporation. In a corporation, the title of “vice president,” for example, has a legal meaning. In a proprietorship, it's just a title.
But no, my wife has no title, no role in the business at all.
To make a long story short, the IRS sent me a notice about one of my other businesses. I called the IRS because they'd credited my account for monies that I didn't send them, and didn't owe (which is why they sent me the notice in the first place). I wanted to make sure that they figured out who really sent them the money and whose business account should be credited.
Anyway, the IRS had this LLC that we own listed as a partnership, when we had actually incorporated it as a stock company. The IRS lady got kind of hysterical and said that we'd filled out our taxes wrong and we'd better file amended returns.
So I called my accountant. Who told me that because my wife and I were the sole shareholders of the LLC, that for legal and tax purposes, it didn't matter if the IRS thought we were a partnership rather than a stock corporation. Because we're married and we file jointly, we're often treated as a single unit. This is so with our proprietorship, as well. My accountant told me that although the business is a SOLE proprietorship, my wife is also an owner.
I understand the reasoning, but previously didn't know that's how things were treated. My wife didn't realize, either, that she is an owner of the proprietorship.
So, it isn't impossible that folks might not be entirely clear about their ownership in a small business.

Cool. Can we get away with that with the official census? ;-)
sole mia? ;>
