One more from the left: Free Republic Pulls Thread Bashing Malia Obama

Yesterday, theHalfrican posted a link to the Free Republic Website where several of its regular members were bashing Malia Obama for wearing a peace symbol t-shirt. The thread had several derogotary, racist, and sexual remarks about Malia. It also included a picture of Michelle Obama speaking to Malia that was accompanied with a racist caption.

I wrote the media contact at Free Republic yesterday, kristinn@bellatlantic.net, questioning the nature of the posters and the site:

Could you please tell me how the owner of the site feels about posts like this one:

...in which conservatives who post regularly at the site make several racist statements about the 11-year-old daughter of President Obama for wearing a t-shirt adorned with a peace symbol? Remarks included the following:

"We’re being represented by a family of ghetto trash." "Looks like a bunch of ghetto thugs. A stain on America."

"What we now are sending the ghetto over to represent us. and if so who the hell is that flea bag who looks to be dragged from the trash dumpster."

"could you imagine what world leaders must be thinking seeing this kind of street trash and that we paid for this kind of street ghetto trash to go over there"

"the world must be laughing like mad right now at that we have this kind of street trash in our white house."

"sad isn’t it that we now have ghetto street trash over there representing us in Europe."

"They make me sick.... The whole family... mammy, pappy, the free loadin’ mammy-in-law, the misguided chillin’, and especially ‘lil cuz... This is not the America I want representin’ my peeps."

In addition, the thread includes a picture of Michelle Obama speaking to her daughter with the caption, "To Entertain Her Daughter, Michelle Obama Likes to Make Monkey Sounds."

Before you dismiss this as only a minority of posters at the site, out of 100 posts on that thread I found only 1 that criticized such remarks. This is not the first time I have seen such an exhibition of blatant racism at Free Republic by members who regularly post there.

Are these the type of participants Free Republic is happy to have posting at its site?

What is Free Republic's policy about making sexual insinuations about minors (particularly relevant in light of the David Letterman/Sarah Palin brouhaha)?

Does Free Republic believe its membership accurately represents the conservative movement?

Does the owner of Free Republic believe this kind of discourse is helpful to rebuilding the Republican Party and furthering its goals?

went back to the site today and saw that the offending thread has been pulled "pending review."

I do note that Free Republic has a disclaimer on the first page that claims it does not condone this type of post; however, I am not sure when the disclaimer was added. Does anyone know?

So, the site will readily delete posts from liberals just because they are liberals and therefore everything they say is automatically considered "arrogant, obnoxious, repugant bile."

But comments calling an 11-year-old black girl "ghetto trash" and a "whore" are pulled "pending review." What is to review? Your site either supports that kind of rhetoric or it does not. Which is it?

If the Free Republic's "conservative family audience" consists of people who say such things as they often do (like yesterday), how conservative are they? And how family-oriented are they? Where were all the posts from other Free Republic regulars or from the owner of the site decrying this kind of racism directed at a child for no apparent reason than the fact that a peace symbol t-shirt inflamed their hatred to disgusting depths, like a red handkerchief in front of a mad bull?

Conservatives continually reinforce the fact that the only families they care about are conservative ones; the only troops they support are ones that do not vote democratic; the only children whose lives they value are the children of conservatives or unborn. How many of those aborted fetuses they claim to hold so dear would they trash had they been born and grown into a pre-teen who wore a t-shirt with a peace symbol or supported a liberal president? Or was gay?

The truth is that conservatives do not know the meaning of Jesus' words despite how much they love to use them when it suits their inner hatred of all those who are different. Worse, they lack basic human decency, as they demonstrate time and again.

From what Ive seen 90% of white people bend over backward.... often making complete fools of themselves not to appear racist. The total inverse is true of black folk. Gets rather old.

And in my experience, the reason white people make fools of themselves in front of black people and try so hard to not appear racists is that the don't actually socialize with black people and have no experience dealing with them. What does that say? I've had no problem having quite politically incorrect discussions about race, racism, and all sorts of related issues not only with black friends but also black co-workers and it's not that difficult if you know that black people aren't aliens, which many white people apparently don't.

As for how black folks deal with white folks, there is a lot of variety there, too. A few years ago, I stopped at a McDonalds near where a friend lived in a fairly rough urban neighborhood (an area that had race riots in 1967) and decided to go inside. A bunch of young black men decided to play "Let's make sure whitey doesn't get served" and proceeded to keep cutting in line so I couldn't order. I stood there an endured it for about five minutes when the young black woman behind the counter finally said, "I think he's next." There are two things one can take from that situation. One is that some blacks are racist idiots who don't like white people. The other is that some blacks are decent people who can do the right thing, even when it would be easier for them not to.

Please note that I'm not saying that all black people are innocent or perfect angels. What I'm saying is that all white people aren't innocent or perfect angles, either. There is good and bad on both sides. But whites tend to give the benefit of doubt to whites and police and blacks tend to give the benefit of doubt to blacks and don't trust the police. And sometimes those assumptions will inevitably be wrong going both ways.

The point is, there are white racists and there are black racists. Back in the 50s, the former was more common. Now, the opposite is true.

I think at the most malicious level, I'd agree with that. I'm not trying to give black racists a pass, nor am I claiming that all black claims of racism are legitimate. What I'm saying is that sometimes there are still legitimate claims of racism and sometimes they are dismissed, out of hand, by whites.

As to Freeper attitudes towards the racist comments in the complaint letter, I think most of us are doing the right thing. We condemn the racist comments and say that Obama’s kids are off limits. Condemning the comments is enough - we don’t have to feel guilty about them unless we personally made them. Maybe you feel that Freepers are “dismissing” those complaints because not enough guilt is being expressed? I’m sincerely trying to understand where you’re coming from. What do you want Freepers to say?

Have I said anything about feeling guilty? That seems to be a major hang-up with several people here but I think it's irrelevant. I don't think anyone needs to feel guilty for something they personally didn't do and find the idea of racial guilt quite offensive. Saying that all white people are guilty for the racism of any white person is as wrong as saying that it's OK for the police to round up any random black person to punish for the crimes committed by a specific black person.

My concerns are how we respond to real racism here (and it does happen), how it looks to others who may turn away from conservatives simply because they perceive us as racist, and how these things hand the left a tool that they use to effectively bludgeon conservatives with. My problem is not that people aren't feeling guilty but the general tone of this site with respect to race and how that looks to others. The left has successfully convinced a lot of Americans that conservatives are inherently racist. That means that, for better or worse, the burden of proof is now on us to make that stereotype look wrong and that's going to take some work.

Try to understand where I’m coming from, too. I had a McCain-Palin bumper sticker on my car before the election. I was REPEATEDLY accused of being a racist by Obama supporters, just for having that sticker.

Yes, because the left has successfully convinced many Americans, including moderates and even social conservatives who should be our allies, that conservatives are racist. Conservative indifference to public relations and how we are perceived by others has let the left define us and paint us into a corner. People here talk tough about not giving in to the liberals. We need to stop giving up on our image and letting the left control it for us.

For example, I thought the song Barack the Magic Negro was quite funny and not racist in the context of the Rush Limbaugh show but once it escaped that context and it was reduced to a sound bite for people who don't understand the context (that it was a left-wing mainstream columnist who called Barack Obama that), it was successfully used to paint Rush Limbaugh and a Republican official as racists because all people saw was the word "Negro" and that was that. When we lose control of our image and how others see us, we lose the information war and ultimately votes.

Oh, and I know that Hispanic isn’t a race. That’s why I said “ethnicity.” “Race” and “ethnicity” are two different things. “Italian” is an ethnicity. “Jewish” can be a religion or an ethnicity. Neither is a race.

Personally, I would say that much of what's called "racism" has nothing to do with race but it actually a culture clash and blacks and Hispanics who adopt the prevailing culture and language have a very different experience than those who don't. I've had black friends asked by a woman at a McDonalds (a different one than the one I mentioned earlier) where they were from because they weren't talking like black people to each other even though there were no white people with them. But that's a whole other topic.

I decided to take a little trip over to KOS, DU and a few other lib sites. By far KOS is the stupidest bunch of liberals on any site. They are the rabid whackjob moonbats that would stand up for their Messiah even if he single handedly wiped out the people of any city in America. They are so drunk with blind adoration, it's sickening. They had the audacity to say that FR's website was antiquated. That gave me a good LOL. Theirs is a joke. Hard to follow and they can only dream of having the amount of traffic that FR does. LOSERS over there, all of them. At least DU has people that will dissent and not agree that everything obama does is perfect. KOS has the balls to defame FR. How ironic is that. They can never defend the fact that all of their noses are brown from being stuck up *the ones* rear end.

Now, let’s get this straight. This is all about KOS coming to FR to get us to shut up. PERIOD!!!!! They know full well that thread was not about race, or kids, it was about what is APPROPRIATE!! The story of the t-shirt was all over the UK sites. Of course our MSM didn't mention it, but other countries did. Of course KOS is thrilled and bragging that they got the entire thread pulled. I don't think it should have been. If there were any racial remarks or the remark of saying she looked like a street whore, those should have been removed and the thread left up. If that had been one of the Palin kids, they would have said far worse, which I will prove to you in a minute.

They chose a few comments out of 100's and seized on them. That isn't the real reason they wanted that thread gone, give me a break. They wanted it gone because of the other posts, ALL of them. The ones that blamed her parents for letting her dress like that. The ones that questioned why we are paying for the kids, grandma, cousins, friends, to go on these trips.
