CA: Illegal immigrants again in the budget spotlight
LA Times ^ | 7/10/09 | Anna Gorman and Teresa Watanabe

As California lawmakers struggle with a budget gap that has now grown to $26.3 billion, one of the hottest topics for many taxpayers is the cost to the state of illegal immigrants.

The question of whether taxpayers should provide services to illegal residents became a major political issue in California's last deep recession, culminating in the ballot fight over Proposition 187 in 1994. That history could repeat itself in the current downturn, as activists opposed to illegal immigration have launched a campaign for an initiative that would, among other things, cut off welfare payments to the U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants. Those children are eligible for welfare benefits because they are U.S. citizens.

State welfare officials estimate that cutting off payments to illegal immigrants for their U.S.-born children could save about $640 million annually if it survives legal challenges.

California has roughly 2.7 million illegal residents, according to an April 2009 report from the authoritative Pew Hispanic Center, accounting for about 7% of the state's population. State officials estimate that they add between $4 billion and $6 billion in costs, primarily for prisons and jails, schools and emergency rooms. Beyond those services, the illegal population adds to the overall cost of other parts of local government, from police and fire protection to highway maintenance and libraries.

On the other side of the ledger, illegal residents pay taxes -- sales taxes on what they buy, gasoline taxes when they fuel their cars, property taxes if they own homes. The total is hotly debated, although most researchers agree that the short-term costs to state and local government are bigger than the revenues.

Many companies that hire illegal workers also withhold Social Security and income taxes from their paychecks, based on workers' invalid Social Security numbers. ..

Yeah, the voters VOTED DOWN support for ILLEGAL aliens and the radical liberal state government IGNORED THE VOTED WILL OF THE PEOPLE. Latest estimates of the money still stolen from legitimate, law-abiding taxpayers is about $15 BILLION per year to support ILLEGAL aliens in Taxifornia. And they whine about not having enough money to pay the state’s bills.

Only the very stupidest of illegals has income tax witheld from their checks. They put down that they've got 14 children so they get an EIC.

This doesn’t take a brain surgeon. Stop funding the illegal aliens. If the elected officials want to keep playing by the Cloward-Pivens rulebook; get rid of them.

Get people who don’t want to spend your money and want to keep America strong.

Income taxes on their income? Opps, forgot that one.

Regardless, it is a simple fact that the lower half of income earners consume more in government services than they pay in taxes (including income taxes if they pay them at all.) There isn’t any doubt that the typical illegal immigrant is a net drain on government dollars. The only question is how much?

That would be a solid number to see. How much does the typical illegal immigrant cost the state of Calif. each year (balanced out with what they pay in incidental taxes—sales, gas, etc...)

Haven’t you heard?

Illegal immigrants actually benefit our economy?

(What kind of mental gymnastics do they do to come up with that answer?)

IIRC, Arnie himself spewed something like that recently.

But the state legislative analyst estimated, based on data from the Pew Hispanic Center, that the state's 6.3 million public school students include about 300,000 illegal residents.

I call BS on that 300K estimate.

“On the other side of the ledger, illegal residents pay taxes — sales taxes on what they buy, gasoline taxes when they fuel their cars, property taxes if they own homes.”

Misleading....(not to mention the auto accidents they have and the subprime mortgage fraud they perpetuate.)

Study: Illegal Immigrants Having More Kids In US Associated Press ^ | April 14, 2009
http://www.thedenverchannel.com/money/19175382/detail.html
Growing numbers of children of illegal immigrants are being born in this country, and they are nearly twice as likely to live in poverty than those with American-born parents...

Overall, illegal immigrants’ children account for one of every 15 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. In 2008, California had the most illegal immigrants at 2.7 million, double its 1990 number, followed by Texas, Florida, New York and New Jersey.

“In the next eight years, the violent collection of criminal drug cartels could overwhelm the state and establish de facto control over broad regions of northern Mexico,” McCaffrey’s report said. “A failure by the Mexican political system to curtail lawlessness and violence could result in a surge of millions of refugees crossing the U.S. border.”

this shouldnt even be a debatable issue - if you are here illegally, dont pay taxes on under the table compensation you receive then it seems to me the obvious answer is “No” - you dont get the benefits of the actual legal, taxpaying citizens

They have scads of children, generate millions of ER and
doctor visits at state expense, get Medical and WIC
at least some of which is state funded, and create work
for the prison system and law enforcement.

Used to be they were a plus, not anymore.

I know they are a draw on expenses. My question is has anyone put a dollar figure on it yet?

loving these numbers. education. $7626 per head. Healthcare. $901 per head. really? 1 day in the hospital swamps that number. have a hard time believing that. Jail-$43895 per head. Now there are a helluva lot of people don’t make that. Plenty would like that salary.
these outlays are crazy.
So- deport the parents and lose the cost of the kids. lighten the healthcare load. Not much can be done premptively about criminals;deport them they’re as likely to sneak back. Therefore simple answer; If a violent crime by an illegal add 10 years to every sentence,no chance of parole. Non violent 5 years same provisions.
I know many will say stiffer penalties and thats fine. just picked those numbers to make a point.
Finally,Deportation after sentence. If you’re caught in the country again,we throw away the key. Why spend money chasing them around?

NY had term limits and Bloomberg decided to ignore that. In Honduras they’d put him on a plane.
These people are Above the Law. Once elected they take on the veneer of royalty, not servants of the state.
Its well past funny they way they flout the will of the people.

“I call BS on that 300K estimate.”
I second that. In my Silicon Valley suburb, the total is at least 50%. They probably count kids of illegals as legal. That is yet another fiction fabricated by our out of control Supreme Court. The 14th amendment was intended for slaves and clearly intended to apply only to children of citizens. No other civilized country has this provision. Ireland recently had to change a similar provision because they were being overrun by illegals just as we are.
