California is now paying out about $80 million a day in unemployment insurance benefits and is on a pace to top $1.5 billion for the month of July, Employment Development Department officials report.
That latest numbers show the severity of the current recession that pushed statewide unemployment to a record 11.5% in May. Unemployment in Orange County had a modern-day record of 8.6% in May.
Unemployment benefits payments have jumped $500 million a month since January when the state paid out $1.1 billion in the wake of a 525,000 surge in new claims. In all of 2008, the state sent out $8.2 billion in unemployment checks.

It will be interesting to see if all of these “enlightened” Califorian and United States citizens will mind keeping all social services open and available to illegal immigrants while their unemployment beneftis become unfunded or denied.
Irresistable force meets the immovable object.
Okay California, show us what happens when push comes to shove. Who gets cut off American citizens or the third world.
Live in the best weather in the USA. Add in high technology and media industries. Ports with immense volumes of trade. Unique cites and natural tourist attractions. Fishing, forestry, gambling, oil, mines, agriculture, etc., etc.
How do you screw that up?
Elect Democrats and suckup RINOS..... key ingredients for disaster.
Dammit! You guys need to INCREASE the taxes until people bleed...
In a word --- enviornmentalists. Also, having your entire legislature (practically) filled with activists for every known grievance group in the country doesn't help.
I think it was yesterday on FOX News that I saw AHHHnold complaining that the legislature was debating pomegranate juice, or something relating to defining it and regulating it. Anyway, he was wondering why they were wasting their time on this stuff, when the state is going down the toilet. I had to laugh; but, then I realized that this state has oil and gas from one end of it to the other in quantities that would certainly help their financial situation and yet they will not drill. It's their own fault, they are dying, but refuse to help themselves. So, I guess it is state suicide.
Your comment about the amount of services for illegals in the state that has helped to push it to edge of bankruptcy (wait, they are handing out IOUs, with nothing to back them up with, so they are over the edge of bankruptcy they just won't admit it). The platinum pension plans for all state workers doesn't help the situation either.
Like GM, they need to declare bankruptcy to enable them to get rid of some of that burden; but, because it would involve renegotiating union contracts, they won't do it. Unions (in this Admin.) are sacrosanct.
And taxpaying citizens and companies are fleeing California — worsening the slide.
At least you can flee an out of control state government. There’s nowhere to run to if the Federal government goes over the edge.
Why the hell do we have unemployment benefits that last 6-9 months? Every person I know on unemployment just screws around for the first 4 or 5 months before they get serious about looking for another job. The only government expenses larger than unemployment benefits are for social security and national defense.
Take a clue from one of the photos presented to Democrat Cong. Jefferson's jury and start searching the freezer of all congressional Dems.
How is California doing this, the state is bankrupt? Is the state paying our with IOUs? or dollars? If IOUs are the recipients using them like cash? are business accepting the IOUs?
I related news, California announces plans to cut police, prison, and education budgets in half. Because if they have to choose, they’d rather get rid of the things people expect government to do than the things that are actually bankrupting theb state.
I don’t know how it works in CA, but when I was in business the unemployment was paid by a tax assessed against businesses.
You were given a starting rate (8.5% of gross payroll if memory serves). After two years you were reevaluated and your rate adjusted up or down based on the number of unemployment claims filed against your business. This seemed very fair to me.
Although, to get technical, our customers paid the unemployment tax as it was built into our selling price for goods we sold. But so was every other cost (materials, labor, rent, etc.).
I would highly suggest reading this article entitled:

We can only hope and pray this is true!
