Tomorrow Pope Benedict XVI and President Barack Obama meet for the first time, an affair much anticipated and in some circles frowned upon by American Catholics in the wake of Obama's controversial Notre Dame commencement speech in May. Conservatives in the church denounced Obama's appearance as a nod by the premier Catholic university to a conciliatory politics that heralds the start of a slippery moral slope.
In truth, though, Obama's pragmatic approach to divisive policy (his notion that we should acknowledge the good faith underlying opposing viewpoints) and his social-justice agenda reflect the views of American Catholic laity much more closely than those vocal bishops and pro-life activists. When Obama meets the pope tomorrow, they'll politely disagree about reproductive freedoms and homosexuality, but Catholics back home won't care, because they know Obama's on their side. In fact, Obama's agenda is closer to their views than even the pope's.
It's fitting that Obama's visit comes just days after the publication of "Charity in Truth," a Vatican encyclical that declares unions, regulation of capitalism's excesses, and environmentalism to be ethical imperatives. The document gives moral credence to Obama's message and to progressive politics writ large.
Even more intriguing is the pope's support for political activism, which he refers to in the encyclical as "the institutional path

Pitiful, isn’t it?
Is that what happened, or are you just making things up as you go along?
I can't stand the woman, but we must be fair.
A guy who believes in partial birth abortion; who is a socialist pacifist; may or may not be a Christian in the first place; has many Islamic sympathies; does not favor Israel over their enemies and our enemies! And this guy is more Catholic than the Pope and is more Christian????? And the Kennedy’s are good representatives of good Christian Catholics????
Wow, they are not even trying to hide their WORSHIP for this guy anymore. Seriously?? Elevating him above the Pope? Scary - downright scary.
Silver lining - I got a new joke out of this.
We can now ridicule the obvious by asking...
Is Barack Catholic?
No different from posting images of how people of other cultures depicted their own Gods.
This is a pretty sick writing. The Kennedy’s are arrogant, debauched people.
This is my best impression of what the Vatican is getting at. If, indeed, they denounce such practices as abusive, I would be glad to learn about it.
Where does the Pope say that specifically? Or is that just what you WANTED to hear him saying?
Catholicism believes in individual achievement and the rewards that come with it. It also believes in the spiritual benefit of personal charity, and recognizes that this disappears in a socialist regieme. It favors capitalism over all economic systems. It certainly WISHES that a UN-type body could insure social and economic justice throughout the world, but it offers no specific plans for one. Christianity also hopes to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony, but is at the same time realistic. Christ taught us that.
Can you explain a different model for unions that is expounded by the Vatican?
I already did. What do YOU think it says?
A lot of non-Catholics make the mistake of thinking that the Vatican is always speaking to the USA specifically. The fact is that it almost never is. American Catholics make up about 5% of the world's total, about twice as many as there are in the People's Republic of China.
What I see from you is ad hominem.
Actually, I'm just looking for you to be more specific, so I can educate you on your mistake. Thus far you you're basically just saying the Pope supports trade unions (He does) and that makes him a Communist/Socialist/Friend of Barry's/etc. I'd like to know how you came to that conclusion, and I'm sure you'll be anxious to learn the truth so you don't make that mistake again. Give me a specific line or example, please, and I will give you the Catholic interpretation to that line.
I assume the headline is telling us that Obama is a better Catholic than the Pope, because the alternative is that it is telling us that American Catholics are no more Christian than Barack Hussein Obama. Talk about confusion of values!
