Organic Farmers in the sights of Congress
Examiner.com ^ | 7-8-2009 | Dianna Cotter

For those of you who have not heard, HR 2749 the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009, is a bill in congress that would basically eliminate Organic farming, and pretty well wipe out your back yard organic garden. For heaven’s sake, don’t even consider selling your homemade jam at a Farmers Market or the Saturday Market! Not unless you are willing to pay the 1000$ licensing fee anyway.

With the stated purpose of making the Food system in the United States safer, the liberal Washington DC Government has decided in its wisdom to make the entire industry formulaic and regulated. They will dictate what good practices are, not the farmers whose livelihoods demand they take the very best care of their land, and produce the best products. It will be the federal government who will dictate with this bill what sorts of fertilizers can and cannot be used, as well as nearly every detail involved in the production and importation of food in America. Failing to follow the government mandates, will result in fines and jail time.

Over regulation in the name of safety.

How much do you want to bet some "Crisis" is manufactured to push this through congress?

I have mixed emotions about this, it will stick my liberal ex-wife’s organic farm in the butt.

This could also give the government the power to withhold food from dissenters. It worked well for Stalin.

To make us safer they'll destroy local farmers' markets which have never been the problem. The problem seems to be domestic farmers who don't have enough bathrooms for their migrant workers or else Mexican farms. Local farmers don't pee on their own tomatoes.

Your government wants you cold, hungry and utterly helpless.

Dead or rotting in jail also works fine for them.

I can’t see that going over with the “green” liberal base. Don’t they like organic stuff because it is better for the environment?

This is the route the EU followed. It is supported by corp interests in order to monopolize the food supply. Next..they will tell you you can’t raise and eat your own chickens, pigs, cattle.

Its what Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn called the Gulag principle.

Complete control over the masses will not be achieved until the Department of Food is put in place.

This bill has Monsantos fingerprints all over it. Use their seeds and their fertilizers only or suffer the consequences, courtesy of Rosa Delario and her Monsanto lobbyist husband.

LOL.... if it gets legalized... the pot will be regulated too. So... no escape for you! LOL

Might be worth a try anyway.

What ARE they going to do with all those topsy turveys!

The EU uses their rules to keep frankenfoods out of Europe. I’m afraid that here the government will mandate the use of GMOs in order to get kickbacks from Monsanto and Cargill.

Exactly.

Not to mention requiring farmers to purchase goods for their industry from government “okayed” sources.

Now I really feel better.... not

With the current government’s obsession of pushing pseudo-science (as in global warming), are agricultural disasters resulting from lunatic policies (re: Trofim Lysenko) on the horizon?

Makes sense if you’re a ‘progressive’. How can any market be ‘outside’ government control when your goal is ‘central planning’?
Gotta get rid of those pesky small businesses. They’re too hard to manage because of they’re just too damned ‘independent’.
Corporations are easier to deal with.
