Rendell warns 800 layoffs coming for state workers

As many as 800 Pennsylvania state employees might have to be laid off because of Republican lawmakers' demands for spending cuts and labor unions' refusal to accept less drastic measures, Gov. Ed Rendell says.

"I regret that deeply," Rendell said Tuesday. "I wish the unions would consider letting me do rolling furloughs. I think it's a fairer way than taking away someone's livelihood, but I can't do that without their assent under the contract."

David Fillman, the executive director of the state's largest employee union, said unions have ruled out furloughs because it involves office shutdowns that are disruptive to government. But Fillman also said he hopes Rendell's cabinet secretaries are able to avoid layoffs by finding ways to save the money.

"I have not seen a mandate that there has to be 800 people leaving," said Fillman, who heads Council 13 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. "So we're hoping the secretaries will use a more surgical cut." ... Snip ...

Let me guess, Fast Eddie... all 800 will be Pennsylvania State Troopers or some other vital government worker directly affecting public safety?

Ed Rendell, continuing the fine tradition of Budgetary Blackmail.

So that’s what he meant by making “cuts”.. Surely he wasn’t referring to his spending increases..:)

Pennsylvania tries the CA Union shakedown ploy.
He forgot to add "women, children and minorities hardest hit".

You could cut the PA State employee roles by 5,000 and still not have cut out all the patronage jobs that PA has created over the years.

Reality is, PA’s state government is far to big, far too costly and basically a den of corruption.

800 state employees? Ha, you could get rid of 800 state “employees” within a mile of Philadelphia City Hall and nobody would ever know the difference. Ghost workers don’t even buy pretzels on the street.

State payrolls nedd to go way down. The Federal payroll too. Taxes too.

You want an energetic, innovative economy? Stop funneling so much money into the public sector.

Completely agree. The problem is that Governors & Mayors immediately threaten to cut core functions of government as part of the budgetary “Game of Chicken.” You could chop PA State Goverment by a significant percentage and nobody would notice.

I'm not. And more importantly, the state legislature isn't buying it. (so far)

I’ve emailed my state Senator. Told him we’d throw him out on his rear if he caves in ONE PENNY on this deal. So far he assures me they are standing firm. Uh-huh. Just like in 2003, and they caved in then... although he told me he didn’t cave, it was all the other GOP Senators.

If they lay off all the DMV workers and state cops... I don’t think I’ll miss them a bit.

Union control of government is one of the realities we have in America that we read right over every day. But this statement shows how truly evil the union are and how fascism is in our government under the innocent sounding back door vehicle of a "labor contract". Make no mistake about it, Unions control public policy via these labor contracts.

Layoff government workers? OK, fine. They can get in the unemployment line with the rest of the Americans who actually did some productive work once upon a time and whose taxes helped pay their inflated salaries.
