Obama to Russia: stop Iranian nuclear weapon and US will scrap missile defence

President Obama today offered to scrap plans for a missile defence shield in Eastern Europe if Russia helped to stop Iran developing a nuclear bomb.

He appealed in Moscow for a new era of partnership between Russia and the United States to fight the spread of nuclear weapons to rogue states and terrorist groups.

"That is why we should be united in opposing North Korea's efforts to become a nuclear power and preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon," he said.

Russia strongly opposes US plans to site the missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, which Washington says is necessary to defend against a surprise attack from Iran.

Mr Obama made clear that he was willing to strike a deal with the Kremlin.

"I know Russia opposes the planned configuration for missile defence in Europe . . . I have made it clear that this system is directed at preventing a potential attack from Iran and has nothing to do with Russia," Mr Obama said in a speech to students graduating from Moscow's New Economic School.

Folks, this is addressing the plan to install missile defense in Eastern Europe.  It is not address our implementation of a missile defense in the U.S.

I disagree with Obama here.  I think he's nuts.  He's not a good negotiator.  However, he's an excellent capitulator.

Russia is playing a suicidal game with Iran's nuclear program.  If Iran gets the bomb it will transfer tech or devices to terrorists.

Russia stands a very good chance of being the first victim of one of those bombs.

As of June 2006, the US Navy has equipped 3 Ticonderoga class cruisers, the USS Lake Erie, USS Shiloh and USS Port Royal, with anti-ballistic missile capability. The US Navy is currently converting 15 additional Arleigh Burke-class destroyers to incorporate the Aegis BMD capability. These ships include: USS John Paul Jones, and USS Russell, USS Ramage, USS Benfold,USS Milius and USS Decatur.[1] A total of 3 cruisers and 15 destroyers are scheduled to have BMD capability by 2009.[2]

I see this as a strategic misdirection on Moscow’s part. Moscow actually cares little about a teeny tiny increase in the number of nukes needed to immolate Europe. It cares much about the ability of a puppet, Iran, to hold America hostage. Look where the leverage is.

Lockheed Martin is developing the Aegis ballistic missile defence (BMD) capability for the Aegis combat system to engage ballistic missiles with the SM-3 missile. 15 Arleigh Burke destroyers have been fitted with the Aegis BMD system, which provides the capability for long-range surveillance, tracking and engagement of short and medium-range ballistic missiles. The system received US Navy certification for full deployment in September 2006. Work was completed on the 15 destroyers at the end of 2008 and the vessels, with three Ticonderoga cruisers, form the Aegis BMD fleet.

That is the point - 0bama doesn't care at all about defending the US from ANYTHING.

0bama is the biggest traitor to ever be in the office of President. Truly sad when one starts thinking that Bill or Hillary would be MUCH better.... I guess compared to 0bama, Hillary really was a "moderate"...

And from all I have heard - 0bama plans to enforce this pseudo-treaty along with the other arms "deals" by an end-run around the Constitution using Executive Orders to bring about the promised cuts.

I really wish our military would do with 0bama what the Honduran military did with their despot who was trying to circumvent their constitution. I believe that the oath when entering the US Armed forces is that they will protect the US from ALL ENEMIES, both foreign and DOMESTIC. 0bama qualifies as both....

Initially, yes - it was to deter a Russian attack. But as time has gone by, the threat has changed and the same defense system is there as a general protection - as part of the defense grid for us an our allies, regardless of where the threat originates.
