Obama to Russia: stop Iranian nuclear weapon and US will scrap missile defence

President Obama today offered to scrap plans for a missile defence shield in Eastern Europe if Russia helped to stop Iran developing a nuclear bomb.

He appealed in Moscow for a new era of partnership between Russia and the United States to fight the spread of nuclear weapons to rogue states and terrorist groups.

"That is why we should be united in opposing North Korea's efforts to become a nuclear power and preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon," he said.

Russia strongly opposes US plans to site the missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, which Washington says is necessary to defend against a surprise attack from Iran. Mr Obama made clear that he was willing to strike a deal with the Kremlin.

"I know Russia opposes the planned configuration for missile defence in Europe . . . I have made it clear that this system is directed at preventing a potential attack from Iran and has nothing to do with Russia," Mr Obama said in a speech to students graduating from Moscow's New Economic School.

"I want us to work together on a missile defence architecture that makes us all safer. But if the threat from Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes is eliminated, the driving force for missile defence in Europe will be eliminated. That is in our mutual interest."

A failure to uphold agreements to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons would turn international law into "the law of the jungle". The US and Russia had learnt to respect a "balance of terror" during the Cold War, but "we have to ask whether 10 or 20 or 50 nuclear-armed nations will protect their arsenals and refrain from using them".

In a speech laced with compliments for Russian culture, and notably light on concerns over democracy

Skillful political ju-jitsu by Obama. He's using the US's diplomatic position on missile defense against us. He's helping Russia have a larger role in world affairs, ensuring that the US is seen as weaker and less capable on the world stage, and -- to put a cherry on top -- he's agreeing to limit our defensive capabilities in return for demonstrating to the world how weak we are.

You can't do this stuff by accident or out of stupidity. This sort of cleverness only comes with deliberate effort.

Putin has to be laughing his rosy red backside off. He couldn't have possibly imagined it would be this easy.

This is the sort of chess move the Russians excel at. They will use this to pry Europe further away from us. All of the former Soviet bloc nations are scared down to their underwear that the Soviets will return. And well they should be. They know that only the USA can keep the Russians out. When Putin pulls down 0bama’s pants and gets him to scrap the missile defense, the Soviet ambassadors in every east European capital tell the foreign ministers that they can’t count on America, we let them down in 1945, 1953, 1956, 1968, 1970, 1980 and are letting them down again. They’d better hurry up and make the best deal with Moscow while they can....

Meanwhile, Putin can “promise” to stop Iran’s nuclear program, but in the end when Iran tests their functional weapon he can hold up his hands, shrug and say “I tried.” Meanwhile, we lost Eastern Europe, Russia is resurgent, and we have a nuclear Iran.

Brilliant move, 0bama. It’s not checkmate. It’s foolsmate.

I’m hoping this is just erasian-missile defence, because really the way the EU have acted towards us They can go F_themselves (Sorry Europeon Freepers I have a chicken coop you can hide in here in NY). This should have nothing to do with destroyer based interceptors or the patriot or Pacific coast intercepters right?

“”That is why we should be united in opposing North Korea's efforts to become a nuclear power and preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon,” he said.”

North Korea already has nukes, and are working on delivery systems. The same delivery systems that the missile defense program is designed to neutralize. But, the whole world is in reality filled with good will and pacifism, and the only reason anyone has weapons is to protect themselves from the tyranny of the US. Right?

I don’t see any required guarantee of results from Ivan’s effort. The Dildo-In-Chief could have at least asked for that before selling Europe down the toilet.

M0r0n — person with mental capacity of 7 to 12 year old.

He’s still that 10 year old kid who wrote two papers about wanting to be a president. Too bad he didn’t stick with something more to his ability, like president of a nursery school.

Range: Mod 1 - 2500 km, Mod 2/3 - 3000 km
Status: Obsolete
In Service: 1968-1996

Details

Russian Designation: R-27

The SS-N-6 was an intermediate-range, submarine-launched, liquid propellant ballistic missile. It represented a considerable leap forward in the Soviet Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM), incorporating a second-stage engine, vastly superior range and accuracy, and Multiple Re-entry Vehicles (MRV). It used storable liquid propellants with a pre-launch time of roughly 10 minutes and a missile that could be launched from a submarine with an interval of 8 seconds between launches. It used an inertial guidance system.

There were three major versions of the SS-N-6, with a fourth version designed for attacking ship surveillance radars was cancelled during the design phase. Like all SLBMs, the purpose of the SS-N-6 was to place hidden nuclear missiles within close range of their targets while maintaining secrecy. The SS-N-6 was designed to destroy strategic land targets, but with its relatively limited (but still greatly improved) accuracy it could only really engage cities and other soft targets. The longer range enabled the submarine to strike US targets from well outside the range of anti-submarine defenses, even as far as some Russian territorial waters. It provided an effective pre-emptive and reprisal nuclear force.

The SS-N-6 had a launch weight of 14,200 and carried a payload of 650 kg. It was 9.0 m long and 1.5 m wide. The Mod 1 and 2 were equipped with single nuclear warheads with 1 MT yields. The Mod 3 could deploy three 200 kT MRV warheads against a target area. The Mod 1 had a range of 2,500 km and an accuracy limitation of 1,900 m CEP. The Mod 2 and 3 used a superior design that increases the range to 3,000 km (1,864 miles) and the accuracy to 1,300 m CEP. The SS-N-6 used a two-stage liquid propellant engine according to some accounts, a single stage by others.

The SS-N-6 began development in 1962 with flight tests beginning in 1966. The SS-N-6 Mod 1 entered service in the Soviet Union in 1968, with the Mod 2 and 3 entering in 1974. A total of 600 missiles were built and at the peak SS-N-6 missiles were carried on 34 boats. The SS-N-6 missiles were deployed on ‘Yankee 1’ submarines. This had been reduced to 12 boats and 192 missiles by 1991, and two boats and 32 missiles by December 1994. The last SS-N-6 compatible submarine was decommissioned in 1996.(1)

Holy Crap, you are telling me that they test fired Intermiate range Sub launcheable missiles with a 650kg (nuclear crude-form weaponizable) warhead? That is serious sh-t.

Obama fully intended to get rid of missile defense anyway. This way he can he can point to a diplomatic “success” in his visit to Russia and when Iran does go nuclear, deflect blame to Moscow.
