Unrest spreads in western China

Unrest in China's volatile western region of Xinjiang spread to a second city on Monday, with police breaking up fresh protests in Kashgar.

Chinese state media reported that police dispersed more than 200 "rioters" at the city's main mosque.

At least 156 people died and more than 800 were hurt on Sunday when protests in the city of Urumqi turned violent.

Beijing says ethnic Muslim Uighurs went on the rampage, but one exiled Uighur leader says police fired on students.

Demonstrators said they had been demanding justice for two Uighurs killed last month in a fight with ethnic Han Chinese at a factory in southern China.

The bloodshed drew international concern, with the US calling for all sides to "exercise restraint".

The official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported on Monday that police believed agitators were "trying to organise more unrest" in other cities in Xinjiang, a mountainous and desert region that borders Central Asia.

About 200 people "trying to gather" at the Id Kah mosque in the centre of Kashgar, on the ancient Silk Road, were dispersed by police early on Monday evening, Xinhua said.

I’m watching BBC America news right now and no mention of this. They did just do a story on the US health care “crisis” though.

I'm rooting for the Uighurs for the time being. China needs a little wake up call to counter its current grandiose prancing about on the world stage.

Ah, those Muslims. Is there anywhere in the world where they get along with their neighbors?

The Chinese are dealing with a restless Caucasian (Turkic) minority. The rest of the world will avert its eyes, since Caucasians are fair game.

Would you get along well with an invader who confiscated your home and land holdings from under you, along with all your possessions?

Those are “caucasians”?

Wow... I’m not sure what I should put on the census now...
I guess I’m a “Native American” since I was born here.

Gee, that seems to be what happened everywhere else in the world, too. Muslims must be the unluckiest people ever.

Gee, that seems to be what happened everywhere else in the world, too. Muslims must be the unluckiest people ever.

Do you see the Saudis sending huge chunks of cash (as they did to help the mujihideen in Afghanistan expel the Soviets) to support a jihad in East Turkistan? These aren't Islamists - they're Uighurs. Calling them Muslims would be the equivalent of calling Poles Catholics. They're fighting for the expulsion of their colonial masters, much as the Poles fought to get the Russian boot off their necks. Note that the Chinese have occupied the country only since 1946. The Uighurs had resisted outside domination for centuries. The Communists came in and slaughtered them with airplanes - nowhere for groups of horsemen to hide on the open plains.

But you can relax. My feeling is that China's Final Solution to the Uighur problem won't take long. Heck - ordinary Chinese literally hacked to pieces 40,000 Chinese Christians during the run-up to the Boxer Rebellion using little more than machetes and axes. With modern equipment, I expect the Chinese to have the Uighurs completely liquidated within a few years. Then you can have your little celebration.

Yeah, the Uighurs are just innocent victims, that’s why a bunch were captured attacking Americans.

John Walker Lindh was captured attacking Americans. Does that mean Americans at large are Muslim terrorists? We were in their neck of the woods - East Turkistan is right next to Afghanistan. The only way they were going to get any training was to pretend they had a common goal with whomever was offering free instruction and equipment. Heck - the North Vietnamese pretended they were prepared to become a Chinese colony to get weaponry from the Chinese during the Vietnam War. Then they fought several border wars to repel Chinese invasions (losing - and killing - tens of thousands). Heck - Uncle Sam and the Chinese supplied the Afghan mujahideen during the anti-Soviet campaigns of the 80's. Did that mean the mujahideen were going to become Christians or Maoists? Going further back, we supplied the Soviets with huge amounts of oil and equipment during WWII. Did that mean we were going to become Communists, or that the Soviets would become capitalists? War is about marriages of convenience, because when the basic issue is survival, just about anything goes. That's why they say all's fair (meaning all types of deception) in love and war.

That’s right, John Walker Lindh had nothing in common with the Uighurs placed in Guantanamo, or did he? It seems there was something...
