Microsoft on Monday warned of a vulnerability in its Video ActiveX Control that could allow an attacker to take control of a PC if the user visits a malicious Web site.
There have been limited attacks exploiting the hole, which affects Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, Microsoft said on its Security Response Center blog.
This is the second DirectShow security hole Microsoft has announced in the past few months. The company has yet to provide a security update for a vulnerability announced in May that involves the way DirectX handles QuickTime files.
Since there are no by-design uses for the ActiveX Control within Internet Explorer, Microsoft is recommending that users implement a workaround outlined in the security advisory. Customers can automatically implement the workaround by following the instructions under "Fix It For Me" in the Knowledge Base article for advisory number 972890 on the Microsoft support site.
Even though Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 are not affected by the vulnerability, Microsoft is recommending that users of those products also use the workaround.
Microsoft is working on a security update and will release it when the quality is at the appropriate level for broad distribution, the company said.

While I am on Internet Explorer here at work, I use Firefox at home. I have been told by so many to NEVER use Internet Explorer, as it is extremely vulnerable to malicious programs. Firefox is supposedly much more secure.
Friends don’t let friends do Microsoft Windows. Just Say No!
Unfortunately, Firefox 3.5 is a buggy piece of junk.
I had some problems with Firefox several weeks ago, but only for a few days until the newer fixed version was available. Since then, no problems at all.
No problemo.
Very true.
Firefox 3 kept crashing on me, but after I upgraded over the weekend, it’s been running fine.
Care to elucidate on that statement? I'm using FireFox 3.0.11 and am particularily troubled by several bugs it contains-I was hoping 3.5 would fix these problems.
3.5 has fixed every single outstanding issue I had. YMMV.
Microsoft is going down. They need something better quick. Maybe they should build something on freebsd?
I updated the other day and it’s given me nothing but trouble.
I use MS Explorer for ONLY one thing: obtaining MS Windows updates. I’ve never had a virus or severe malware hit using FireFox, and the typical array of tools it has available (Ad block, NoScript, etc.) along with Spybot S&D plus AVG free.
I am not the most “safe” surfer around the net, either.
Well, I upgraded a few days ago. I really like the spped improvements. 3.5 is way faster than 3.0.x. I have had a few crashes at work with it, but haven't had any at home. YMMV. FF3.5 running on Fedora 11. Yeah baby, I'm livin on the bleeding edge. :-)
I’m running the august release of Unbutu with FF3.0 and it’s already blazing with no crashes or even glitches. It is a newer machine with 3gig of ram, but the performance graph is almost deadlined at like 5% with 20 tabs open, the August jaunty jackalope incarnation rocks. The only time I even boot over to Vista is for games.
Yes, it is.
