Palin and Her Enemies
NYT ^ | 7/6/2009 | Ross Douthat

...Here are lessons of the Sarah Palin experience, for any aspiring politician who shares her background and her sex. Your children will go through the tabloid wringer. Your religion will be mocked and misrepresented. Your political record will be distorted, to better parody your family and your faith. (And no, gentle reader, Palin did not insist on abstinence-only sex education, slash funds for special-needs children or inject creationism into public schools.)

Male commentators will attack you for parading your children. Female commentators will attack you for not staying home with them. You’ll be sneered at for how you talk and how many colleges you attended. You’ll endure gibes about your “slutty” looks and your “white trash concupiscence,” while a prominent female academic declares that your “greatest hypocrisy” is the “pretense” that you’re a woman. And eight months after the election, the professionals who pressed you into the service of a gimmicky, dreary, idea-free campaign will still be blaming you for their defeat.

All of this had something to do with ordinary partisan politics. But it had everything to do with Palin’s gender and her social class.

A few more pieces like this and young Ross will find himself an "ex-New York Times" columnist.

One of the saddest things to me is how it’s been WOMEN who have been Sarah’s bitterest enemies. Of course it says more about them than her, but liberal hatred runs far deeper than anything on the right.

>>>>>But last Friday’s bizarre, rambling resignation speech should take her off the political map for the duration of the Obama era.

True, but Nixon was politically dead in 1962 and President in 1969, so anything is possible.

I don’t think we can ever call anyone “dead” in American politics today.

In the past, a Bill Ayers, a Rev. Wright, would have sunk any presidential candidate. And, well...we all know what happened.

Thats 7 years , not 3. Anything's possible, but I would venture 2012 is less likely for her now.

I agree with you and I agreed with the writer too. Palin is "off the political map for the duration of the Obama era."

IMO, the reason for the sharp attacks was neither background nor gender, but was explicitly her conservative political philosophy. The fact that she communicates that philosophy in a way that connects with ordinary Americans was a close second, but the conservatism was the basic issue.

Palin PING!

Anyone on or off the Palin ping, write me.

The NYT editor must have been asleep to let this slip through.

She’s tough. She’ll come through it just fine. She’s smart enough to let the Libs choke on their own words, because she knows everything they say will come back and haunt them when she is ready to run.

Just keep praying for her and her family!

She certainly has grabbed everyone’s attention. I wonder whether she will soon go from attacked to ignored by the MSM, as I think that there is no middle ground with her coverage.

Huge class warfare component to this. It is a little amusing to see "political experts" stuck knee-deep in debt for a little Manhattan or Georgetown condo turning up their collective noses at "trailer trash" who inhabit a $500,000 house on a two-acre lakefront lot in Alaska. That they paid for themselves. There is a certain amusement as well in the realization on the part of people whose circumstances are similar to the Palins' that we are regarded as an alien species by people who consider themselved broadmindedly multicultural. Don't bother pointing that out to the likes of Kathleen Parker or Maureen Dowd, however. They don't get it because they can't.

There is, as well, something far darker in play as the FR thread "It Always Has Been About Trig" pointed out. These commentators view a Down's baby as an insult to their eugenic assumptions and anyone who would hold one unashamedly in public as being sanctimonious for doing so. This is, for any of us who actually know people with Down's Syndrome, profoundly disturbing. The subtext, "that child should be dead," is something so deeply evil that its proponents seldom can examine it directly, preferring instead the innuendo, the sly indirect smear, the pious invocation of the ridiculous euphemism "choice" to describe something the child would most certainly not have. That cultural break is the size of a chasm and it will never be bridged.

She’s the winnowing fork - separating the wheat from the chaff.

This is why she generates such strong reaction from those who are engaged in The Battle.

Nixon was also dead in 1952 and finally hacked to pieces in 1974.

Then the ghouls showed him on camera crying and trembling when Pat died. There’s a special place for the media in Hell.

It’s deflection, trying to say she was attacked for other reasons than being a conservative rock star. They are declaring victory and trying to say any politician could face this. We know differently.

A Democrat Palin would make Michelle’s armpit stories evaporate. She would be hip and great and wonderful. She would be on the “View.” She would be everywhere as heir to Obama.

These people are contemptible.
