Former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara has died.
McNamara, 93, died at home in his sleep Monday morning, his wife Diana told The Associated Press. She said he had been in failing health for some time.
Known as a policymaker with a fixation for statistical analysis, McNamara was president of the Ford Motor Co. when President John F. Kennedy asked him to head the Pentagon in 1961.
McNamara worked for seven years as the defense secretary in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, longer than any other person in that post. He headed the war department during the build-up of forces in Vietnam.
He is considered the architect of the concept of "mutual assured destruction," a key feature of the nuclear arms race during the Cold War.

I always refer to Cohen as the Undersecretary of State for Military Matters, because Madeleine Albright ran defense policy during Cohen's tenure.
Donald Rumsfeld was Chief of Staff to President Ford in 1974-75 during the final months of the Vietnam War after being US Ambassador to NATO for President Nixon. He was named SECDEF in October, 1975. He was appointed SECDEF again by the President George W. Bush in 2001, oversaw the defeat of the Taliban later that year and the successful invasion of Iraq and capture of Saddam Hussein in 2003. He underestimated the number of ground troops and equipment they would need during the transition to a democratic, post-Ba’athist Iraq. He preferred unmanned drone planes and “shock and awe” bombing to cut costs in the short term. These decisions cost lives, but not on the scale of what McNamara did.

Since when is justifiable anger indecent? Christ was angry at the moneychangers in the Temple. Many, many people had their friends, family and loved ones killed because of this man and his boss. I think their anger is justified and to deny them the right to express it is indecent.
If I might interject, I don’t think he is saying you have to grieve his death, just don’t dance on his grave. Not that many people don’t have that right because of his actions, but because we are supposed to be classier then that. We are better people then that.
We don’t need to pile on in glee. He is facing his maker right now, and like all of us, will be judged for our transgressions.
For now, let us offer prayers to his family.

Another decision I don’t agree with: Closing the Springfield National Armory, and forcing DOD to use private contractors for small arms development.
