Former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara has died.
McNamara, 93, died at home in his sleep Monday morning, his wife Diana told The Associated Press. She said he had been in failing health for some time.
Known as a policymaker with a fixation for statistical analysis, McNamara was president of the Ford Motor Co. when President John F. Kennedy asked him to head the Pentagon in 1961.
McNamara worked for seven years as the defense secretary in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, longer than any other person in that post. He headed the war department during the build-up of forces in Vietnam.
He is considered the architect of the concept of "mutual assured destruction," a key feature of the nuclear arms race during the Cold War.

Come on, he wasn’t worse than Harold Brown of the Carter Iran hostage rescue attempt.
Harold Brown was the worst by a landslide.
You know as well as I do that the man had his faults (and in Mr. McNamara’s case they are plethora) but kicking a man after he’s passed is quite low-rent and quite DU style, isn’t it? Discussing his failings/faults is one thing, simply insulting the man when he’s dead serves NO purpose whatsoever. May God bless and comfort his family.
I am reluctant to speak ill of the dead, but McNamara has the blood of 50,000+ American soldiers on his hands so I hope he rots in the lowest region of h*ll. Best and the brightest indeed.
Sure as hell not this one.
Sorry to say but the posterior orifice lbj did not start the war. truman had the first connection, and each succeeding president added to it.
40 years ago my ass. I still go there 2-5 nights a week. Not to count the daytime shit. Not asking for a bit of pity. Would go there again.
“Youre obviously YOUNG and with your assesment of this thread being a human cesspool”
Young has nothing to do with his posting.
“Theodore, or Franklin?”
I would say both, but thats just me.
I am absolutely speechless. I have no idea what to say.
thank you for fighting for my freedom before I was even born.
The blame can be spread around quite a bit for such a long conflict but number 1 on my hit list is the democrat congress of 74/75. More than any other they are to blame for the loss of South Vietnam and what followed.
You’re entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts, kid.
That’s why you don’t search for exact title matches.
McNamara will NOT be mourned in our home, nor any of my fmailies.
Me too. We instrumented a Phoenix missile to measure the captive flight environment on the F-14. We flew it on F-14 #3 for about a year and a half. The first flight was on flight number 3 of that plane.
Those of us who try to live as Christians especially need to keep that in mind. McNamara was not a lovable figure but he was a human being with a soul.
Simon Cameron (March 8, 1799 June 26, 1889) was a Lincoln appointee. :D
Theodore or Franklin? IMO both Theodore and Franklin were extremely dishonest as are the vast majority of the Roosevelt clan. The damage both Roosevelt Presidents did in the name of Progrssive Politics was a disaster.
A pox on the whole bunch!
I am glad McNamara is dead, he will not be missed. And your concern you pretend to have should be given to those that fought for your freedom not for a man that did all he could to destroy our soldiers.
I hope he meets the boys from 881S, and that they give him a fitting welcome.
