Former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara has died.

McNamara, 93, died at home in his sleep Monday morning, his wife Diana told The Associated Press. She said he had been in failing health for some time.

Known as a policymaker with a fixation for statistical analysis, McNamara was president of the Ford Motor Co. when President John F. Kennedy asked him to head the Pentagon in 1961.

McNamara worked for seven years as the defense secretary in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, longer than any other person in that post. He headed the war department during the build-up of forces in Vietnam.

He is considered the architect of the concept of "mutual assured destruction," a key feature of the nuclear arms race during the Cold War.

I am sick to my stomach. one of those things that knocks your faith in humanity down another notch.

You want to get sick to your stomach?

Go to Washington D.C., to the Viet Nam War Memorial and look at every precious name on that long, black wall, and realize that Robert McNamara is responsible for thousands of those names' being there.

Your comparison with the leftists' hatred of Tony Snow is invalid at every level. Leftist haters ARE the legacy of the '60's se_ohio. That hatred of America and all that is right and good is a direct descendent of the leftist hatred of America 40 years ago.

I still agree that we should not be filled with hatred and eaten up by anger, but in this case there is a valid cause for those emotions. In the case of the leftists and Tony Snow, the hate is a result of their own evil, and the goodness of Tony Snow. Totally different in every way.

Do you think Tony Snow came close to causing the death of 58,000 young Americans. I don't get the comparison. Tony Snow was a Conservative therefore it was good he got cancer and died to the whackos at the DU. Robert McNamara and his boss LBJ didn't just have an opinion I disagreed with. He cost many lives and caused irreparable harm to this nation. It wasn't an innocent mistake. They knew that they weren't really fighting to win. They were causing Americans to be killed just so they could preserve a political career. Just because this man died does not mean that have to lie about his legacy. What he did was wrong. Dying doesn't change that.

McNamara was like too many people in positions of authority; he possessed an excess of cleverness combined with a dearth of wisdom.

The American people may not have approved of McNamara, but they continued to elect politicians who carried out McNamara-style follies.

“I would add Theodore Roosevelt to Goldwater list of the most dishonest men.”

Theodore, or Franklin?

Teddy seemed pretty outspoken.

Maybe im stupid to ask what would Jesus say about of all this.

I don’t know if Robert McNamara was a christian. But let us remember that Saul, or Paul.. was a brutal tyrant who had people slaughtered and cursed God for satififaction. The Lord Jesus Christ had mercy on him.

we have to stop this.

A decent sentiment. Never mind those who disparage your age, the sentiment is older than them all. King Agamemnon urged Odysseus to curse Ajax. The hero's response was "No, he was my enemy in life." Odysseus understood what Hollywood won't. Odysseus knew he was a man, and mankind dies. There is no such thing as a good death. We should be better.

I've been watching the "Perfesser" in his own words on YouTube. His whole concept of proportionality in warfare proves his incompetence. There is no proportionality. War is horrible and complete. Holding back because of squeamishness is cowardice and gets good men killed.

Corner the bastards, cut them off, and kill them with overwhelming force. Or don't go to war.

Do we want to win? Or do we care what other people think?

Your reply needs a sarcasm tag.

It is inexplicable how McNamara ended up in the positions he ended up, because he was dangerously incompetent.

Before you go telling Laz what to do, you need to do some research on Project 100,000.

Bad man, good death, indeed.

You know, it took all of 10 seconds to find out what part your little friend McNamara had to do with WWII.

So what is your problem.

There were, of course, "criminals" who managed to get into the military during Nam, during Korea, during WWII, during WWI, during.......

That's a certainty.

No doubt some of them used the Project 100,000 procedures to facilitate their entry. At the same time there were an overwhelming majority of those guys whose only problem had been to be born during a time when the standards for entry into the military were higher than they had been in earlier wars ~ e.g. 1812, Revolution, French & Indian, Queen Anne's, and so on.

Ollie North is the guy who started off lambasting the enlisted personnel brought in under Project 100,000. He just couldn't bring himself to blame the officers managing the program.
