Former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara has died.

McNamara, 93, died at home in his sleep Monday morning, his wife Diana told The Associated Press. She said he had been in failing health for some time.

Known as a policymaker with a fixation for statistical analysis, McNamara was president of the Ford Motor Co. when President John F. Kennedy asked him to head the Pentagon in 1961.

McNamara worked for seven years as the defense secretary in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, longer than any other person in that post. He headed the war department during the build-up of forces in Vietnam.

He is considered the architect of the concept of "mutual assured destruction," a key feature of the nuclear arms race during the Cold War.

I am sure there had to be many good troops out of that group, I am talking about the criminals and worse that made it into the service .... Some of those poor guys had no business being in the Boy Scouts, much less the Army or Marine Corps.
I realize you are NOT praising McNamara here, you are honoring the troops...I like your tale about the bricks.... since you ‘got me by a couple of months, guess I am the BNG here. however probably got to the Land(s) of the rising sun prior you....

If you weren't there, your opinion doesn't count. The world is a better place without the beancounter from Chrysler.

The braintrust at Ford wanted nothing to do with the Mustang when it was launched. They thought the car would be overshadowed by the....... Ford Falcon.

Now, if that doesn’t tell you all you need to know about McNamara’s judgment nothing else will.

Good riddance to that slimy incompetent, cowardly revisionist swine. I think there are probably less than five people whose death notices I would genuinely celebrate, and this turd was one of them.

If it weren’t for him Vietnam might have been a completely different war...winnable.

He is a great example of why liberals suck: They know nothing and have no experiences so they turn everything into an academic exercise at other peoples’ expense all the while thinking they are the greatest.

Well.....McNamara left Ford in 1961—well before the Mustang debuted.

Aspin didn’t live very long as Defense Secretary so at least in his case there is a mitigating factor.

I doubt very much that Lyndon Johnson loved this country. Johnson loved himself, money and power. He was a very poor man that got into politics and became a very, very rich man. Just like in Arkansas with the Clintons many people that opposed him ended up dead. Between him using Social Security to pay for his “great society” and using and killing young Americans to fight a war he didn’t have the guts to win because of political repercussions we are lucky we survived long enough for Carter and Obama to put the final nails in our coffin.

So adeptly concise and you certainly hit the nail right on the head.

For what its worth, I think Johnson and McNamara probably DID want to win the Vietnam war—they just didn’t have the first idea how. Actually, Johnson thought of it in very in terms: his manhood vs. that of Ho Chi Min. The execution of the war was so micromanaged, it was laughable. Part of this was due to Johnson’s fear that the Soviets would jump in and the war would escalate into WWIII. That was why he picked the targets himself.

Nixon had the right idea with Linebacker. The problem was it should have been executed in 1965, not 1972.

The Falcon wasn’t much of a car, untill they lifted the body off and invented the Mustang.

Now what if he was Tim McVeigh?

Or how about a predator such as John Couey who is a repeat sex offender who raped and murdered a little girl?

Do we still offer our thoughts and prayers to their families because we have class?

My father is a Vietnam vet, and many of his friends are on the wall because of McNamara’s moronic policies.

Screw McNamara.

I’d rather offer prayers and thoughts to the families of the tens of thousands of Americans as well as our allies who died in vain because of McNamara, Johnson and Congress.

(snip)- But you can’t dwell on it. and sometimes it is human nature to find someone and put goat horns on them. But you can’t go back and change things. I am sure McNamara wished he could have.

Are you kidding me...?? Robert McNamara and LBJ were personally responsible for killing over 58,000 American soldiers.. not counting the thousands that died in the ensuing years afterward because of agent orange, drug abuse, homelessness and other sustained debilitating maladies ... and, by the way the hundreds of thousands of American soldiers maimed and broken for their lifetime.

The policy of that odious administration at that time was to even lie about the daily death count every night on television... as if a 5:1 enemy to American casualty rate was good news.

The LBJ/McNamara administration was as criminal as any deranged serial killer... they had a pathological disregard for innocent life.
