Why did Sarah Palin step down?
Theories abound. But some of the people closest to the Alaska governor say she wanted to regain control of a political script that slipped out of her hands the moment she burst onto the national stage. She also wanted to shield herself and her family from the attacks that seem to have been aimed permanently at them in the 311 days since Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) announced her as his running mate, according to some former campaign aides and other advisers who speak regularly with Palin or her husband, Todd.
The Sarah Palin who stood outside her Wasilla, Alaska, lakefront home Friday to surrender her term with 18 months remaining appeared vulnerable and anything but the pugnacious hockey mom and combative candidate whom Americans came to either adore or revile. Had Sarah left as one usually does as governor at the end of her term in 2010 after doing a good job as governor, people would have listened. However, she quit mid term; this was not wise if she wants to run for presidency. I can see the DNC ads now...Sarah will be accused of abandoning her state to run for higher office (political motivation) or she will be called a quitter. Neither is helpful for a presidential candidate. This is the reality.
Why are people still asking this? Didn't they listen to her resignation speech? Perhaps they did but still want to speculate and "rumornate" about her reasons.

She did fight for Alaska and achieved a heck lot more than many two term governors. She saw it in the best interest of Alaska if she let her Lt Gov. Parnell continue her policies, since the political lawsuit warfare against her was consuming state time and money.
Beside that it is more honorable for a politician to withdraw from office if he has other aspirations, rather than getting paid by the taxpayers, while he is campaigning for something different.
As a reminder (a case from countless others) Reagan was elected by the people of California for Governor in 1967. In 1968 he was already running for President. He didn't succeed then... but he obviously was willing to "turn his back" to those that voted him for Governor.
There are countless cases of politicians resigning before campaigning (Dole... who received high praise for this by Gingrich and Barbour) or campaigning while in office (most of them do).
The hypocrisy towards Palin is typical and blatant as ever.
I do not believe Gov. Palin could win the nomination at this time. I don’t know what the future holds, but do not believe her resignation as governor helps her case. I do believe it is wrong to quit when you made a promise to the people of Alaska. she should have served out her term.

You "complain" about the attacks on her, while suggesting that her politics are influenced by menstruation.
By quitting-and that's what it is. It doesn't matter how you spin it, she QUIT! She will never be able to duck the charge that they got to her and that she is a quitter. I don't blame her, that's her choice. She made it and now she's going to have to live with that choice. The article states that she did it primarily for her kids. OK, I can see that, but if you're going to be a factor on the national political scene, you have to be a bit tougher than that-not a slam at Palin just an observation on the nature of our political landscape today.
Anyway, I was thinking that too. Head of the RNC. Nice place for her to really have an effect on the way our spineless national party redefines itself.
Your reality is different than mine I guess. I dont follow the rules that Washington and the media make when deciding my leader in a sense. This is what we have been allowing for the last couple of decades. Why are some so tied to the norm? Geez, what is normal anymore look at the yahoo in office!!!! What have we done! We need bold moves and someone to come out swinging and if it is her she needs to be hands on. She left Alaska in good hands and you know it.
Dole got the nomination, after resigning from Senate.
I don’t agree. Sen. Dole’s term was ongoing during the election. Actually, I don’t think Dole should have resigned anyway. Sarah’s term as governor would have been up in 2010. Plenty of time for a presidential run then. The resignation only hurts her chances...not helpful.
This election was held during Dole’s term as Senator. Palin’s term as governor would have been over in 2010-well before 2012. I don’t think Dole should have resigned anyway. of course Dole was clear about this, and said he was resigning because he was running for presidency. I did not hear Gov. Palin say this in her speech-way to early.
a) To campaign while in office, being paid by the taxpayer for something that's not part of your job.
b) If you think you have done your best (and she did) in office and may soon have other aspirations, you leave office and won't waste taxpayers money for your political ambitions.
The worst thing in American politics is the perpetual campaigning while in office. This is the true betrayal of voters.

You wait until 2010 to begin your campaign-plenty of time, govern your state well and leave in an honorable fashion after fulfilling your sworn duties.
