How hedge fund wives are learning to cope (a really different world)

How hedge fund wives are learning to cope

New York’s super-rich are feeling the pinch — but don’t feel too sorry for them. The party had to end

Tatiana Boncompagni

On a recent sunny afternoon in New York City I was talking with a girlfriend who happens to be a hedge fund wife. She was complaining about her husband, once a highly compensated trader whose fund had closed down and who now, in her opinion, wasn’t doing enough to find a job. The couple had been bickering non-stop about their cashflow problems. From behind a pair of oversized black lenses, she confided in me that she was at her wit’s end and was considering pulling the plug on the relationship. “I didn’t get married for this,” she whimpered, adding ruefully, “Do you know I have to take the subway now?”

Since moving to New York eight years ago (and marrying my husband, the vacuum-cleaner heir Maximilian Hoover), I have become well acquainted with Manhattan society. We move in elite circles, although my husband is no hedgie — in fact, he is the president of an alternative energy company. Nonetheless, I have attended baby showers at billionaires’ homes, a wedding where the tablecloths were made of faux fur and another featuring Victoria’s Secret supermodels and mountains of caviar. I have been flown to Paris on Concorde for a birthday party and watched Jamie Niven, the Sotheby’s vice-chairman, conduct an auction in aid of a nursery school where the highest bid — more than $15,000 (£9,920) — went for a tablecloth decorated with toddler handprints.

While many of us may have fun watching hedge fund wives being knocked off their pedestals, most of us have lived a little too high on the hog, wanted too much, saved too little, felt entitled to a lifestyle beyond our reach.

The first girlfriend mentioned obviously didn't marry for love but for money. We used to call that "legalized prostitution."
I thought Tatiana wrote a good article - not what I usually read but somehow this caught my attention. As she summarized it, how many of us aren’t a little guilty? I was for years, until I sat down and checked my income-outflow. Something had to give. I gave myself a complete attitude makeover. I talked myself into believing that paying down debt was as much fun as buying “stuff” (most of which I didn’t need), in a couple months I believed it. Now I’m a genuine skinflint, I wonder how hard it will be to start spending money again - most of my clothes are worn out, I need a new bed and really want a new car and a nice HDTV. My credit debt is now down to a very manageable level but I just can’t make myself spend money - it’s harder to change back than I thought it would be.

“I didn’t get married for this,” she whimpered...

Which part of "for richer or poorer" did you not understand, sweetie?

I’m proud of you and your new found habits. You’ll find you’re a lot happy with no debt because debt is a mortgage on your future. The only way to live free is to be debt free.

Have you also noticed that these people also tend to vote Democrat?

Good attitude to have. I don't have any debt except the normal monthly bills, utilities, real estate taxes, insurance etc. I live on a circular block, (one entrance and the same exit) when the postman brings me a bill I try to write a check and get it in the envelope, stamped and addressed and give it to him before he passes my house again on the way out.

These people saved NOTHING? Come on. I know it takes a while to wrap your brain around this stuff, but if they just sold all their stuff, paid cash for a nice home in the country on 100 acres or so, they’d be set for life. And one wouldn’t have to take the subway...anywhere, LOL!

I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor and rich IS better, but Reality is the best teacher.

I hope these “Hedgies” get some much needed help.

Reality is the best teacher.

Remeber these are the best of the best, the guys who made it to the top of the pile of guys figuring out how to make lots of money. Try to get your head around these guys primary reason for existence being "investing" creating capital goods, and being rewarded when the enterprises they create pay off. Instead, all these leaches have been doing is tapping into the credit slosh created by our friends at the Federal Reserve and using the loot on fractional ownership of jet aircraft and getaway homes in the Caribbean.

These guys never knew reality since they aced their sociology papers at Harvard or Yale, telling their professors how much white male paternalism is responsible for the ills of the capitalist system.

I can't think of any scummy group that doesn't vote for dems. They've got all the criminals - all the gays who molest children - all the trial lawyers - all the poverty pimps... most members of the MSM... etc. etc. etc.

“I didn’t get married for this”

No, she got married for this ===> $$$. A whore by any other name is still a whore.

I can’t blame any woman for chasing a successful man and more power to her if she catches him. I do blame her for dumping him when he fails. That is a whore. The ones who stick it out with their husbands, I hold in much higher regard. The irony is, she will be worse off. He will be successful again and she’ll regret dumping him. What a piece of human waste.

There is a hedge fund wife in us all.

She must be hanging out with my inner child. Can't see hide nor hair of either of them.

I honestly don't envy these poor lost souls at all. In a few minutes I'm going out to fight a swarm of flies and mow my lawn. And I'll have a better day than any of them.
