LONGMONT — Free Marijuana in Longmont is collecting signatures to ask voters in November to change city pot laws.
But even some members of the group aren’t confident they’ll get the question on the ballot.
The group wants to legalize possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana for adults and reduce city penalties for public consumption of marijuana and possession of some types of drug paraphernalia.
Volunteers have been walking neighborhoods, knocking on doors and visiting local bars and hangouts as they try to collect the 3,485 signatures they need to put the question before voters.
Free Marijuana volunteers began circulating petitions June 19. The city cannot count any signatures older than 21 days, which makes Friday the group’s target to turn in the petitions to the city clerk’s office.
Longmont resident Paul Tiger said the group has about 25 people circulating petitions, but he is not sure it will be enough.
The group basically needs to collect 200 signatures a day to meet its goal, Tiger said. So far, 54 petition booklets are circulating or completed, he said. Even if each booklet was filled and every signature was valid, that would be only about 2,100 signatures.
“We had a bunch of petitioners lined up to do this, but when the petitions were published, it was difficult to round them (the petitioners) all up,” Tiger said. ......

I have to say, I'm laughing my ass off about this. When it was first reported at the start of their effort, I commented to my wife nothing would come of it because they'd be too strung out to accomplish anything, and their constituency wouldn't be registered to vote anyway.

Ahhhhh, Longmont. Is Shorty’s still open? I used to travel to Longmont once a month, and always found a way to end up at Shorty’s for dinner. That might have something to do with my weight gain, but I doubt it.
Were you making the same generalizations before they got it passed in a much bigger city like Denver? Who gives a damn what they do in Longmont. These city wide petitions don’t mean much anyway.

Why are they doing this in Longmont when Boulder is just down the road?
The original owner of Shorty’s retired many years ago and sold the restaurant, and it has had more than one owner since then I believe, opened and closed in fits and starts, and not considered as good a restaurant as before.
Because they live in Longmont and want to smoke dope at home?
Good question! Actually, they won’t be able to rouse themselves from their bongs long enough to stumble into the daylight and collect the signatures, so they won’t file anyway.
Remember: If you want something done right, don’t get a pothead to do it.
Even if they screw up their tasks, you just cant be mad at a pothead because theyre so darn fun to watch!
Yeah, they are big failures. They couldn’t get it done in a pissant town like Longmont but could get it done in the biggest city in the state.
