ROGERSVILLE The pending budget problem for the Hawkins County school system got quite a bit worse Thursday as administrators realized that nearly $1.4 million in federal stimulus money awarded to the county has been included as part of the state funding allocation.
Prior to Thursday, Director of Schools Charlotte Britton and her staff had been under the impression that the federal stimulus money was above and beyond what is projected to be the state BEP (Basic Education Program) allocation to Hawkins County Schools for 2009-2010.
Although the budget has not yet been finalized, the Board of Education was expecting to use that additional $1.399 million to cover the cost of several building improvement projects such as a new roof for Surgoinsville Middle School, which alone has been estimated to cost $500,000.
Britton told the Times-News Thursday that in calculating the budget with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money that was awarded during the week of June 20, she didnt realize that the ARRA money had already been factored into the BEP total allocation by the State Department of Education.

Don't worry they will do both. If I believe my local assessor, the value of my house is something like 3 or 4 billion dollars now.
