IIRC Puller quoted the statement to his regimental officers. Smith gave the statement to the press who had asked about how he felt leading his Marines in a retreat, The actual quote, "Retreat? Hell! We're just attacking in a different direction!"

Hollywood made a pretty good film titled "Retreat Hell" Frank Lovejoy played a character based on Puller, and a few years later played a character based on Curtis LeMay in Strategic Air Command.
