Palin made the announcement from her home in Wasilla, flanked by her husband, Todd, and family and state commissioners.
Palin's decision now allows her to avoid the difficult task of running for president while serving as governor.
I love Sarah but you can’t quit in the middle of a term when the job you want is 3.5 years away.
I don’t think she will run in 12.
Not exactly quit right now... She will leave office 7/26/09
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay - O(bama), Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaay-O(bama). The Banana Republic of America is alive and well. When the decent people in government start bailing out, you know the country is in heap big trouble.
wtf. I hate game players.
What a shame. This is going to embolden the MSM so much... their campaign of hate appears to have worked and now they’ll use it on whomever is next to step up for what’s right (if there is a next person to step up). Obama running against McCain is pretty much the same thing as Obama running unopposed.
She’s announcing something important.
There’s probably not enough money in existence to defend herself from constant and neverending ethics legal challenges from unethical little people.
Sarahs brother tells FOX that shes been spending too much time defending herself against alleged ethics violations.
Bad precedent IMHO. With this development, any Democrat who does not want a GOP candidate to become successful can concoct alleged violation after violation until you tire of the whole thing.
Hillary has more resilience than this unfortunately.
Sadly I think its probably a health issue with her or members of her family. I wish them the best.

has the official release. Quote from Palin:
I am determined to take the right path for Alaska even though it is not the easiest path, said Governor Palin after the announcement. Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional Lame Duck status in this particular climate would just be another dose of politics as usual, something I campaigned against and will always oppose. It is my duty to always protect our great state. With that in mind, my family and I determined that it is best to make a difference this summer, and I am willing to change things, so that this administration, with its positive agenda, its accomplishments, and its successful road to an incredible future, can continue without interruption and with great administrative and legislative success. I look forward to helping others to fight for our state and our country, and campaign for those who believe in smaller government, free enterprise, strong national security, support for our troops, and energy independence.
Terrible political timing to do this on the Fourth of July weekend.
The hateful left is going to have a field day with this.
The Fox headline is not accurate: “transfers power” unless it has already happened.
Listening...we’ll know in a minute....
Now she is free to say or do any thing she wants. Hell she can even wear a coat now with a snowmobile logo on it huh?
And she can study and prepare for a bright future!
This will be the source of endless speculation, most of it arrant nonsense.
I would like to hear more from Sarah before wondering if she is doing the right thing. The “right thing” takes on many meanings and Sarah’s definition is the one that counts.
This has really been a Sarah Palin day on Free Republic. I can’t think of any other topics/personalities that get such continued enthusiastic interest from all sides.
I am praying that things will work out for Sarah in the way that she wants. The woman has been treated in an even more shabby manner than Clarence Thomas - and that says a lot.
Sarah Palin is speaking! This is the first campaign speech of 2012!!! Go Sarah!!!!!!!!!!!! She makes Obama look like a kindergartner.! She is on fire! What a woman!
Wrong answer Sarah. Quitting in the middle of your term is NOT a Presidential resume bullet that you want. It also makes her look like she can’t stand the heat, unfair as it has been.
I’m very surprised and very disappointed in her.
This is what I would call throwing a curve ball, something unexpected and right out of thin air...
Don’t know exactly what it means though...
