Just when you thought things couldnt get more farcical in our nations capitol, the Al Franken Circus heads to town. Franken was declared the winner yesterday of the long-contested Senate race by the Minnesota Supreme Court with a razor-thin margin of 312 votes out of over 2.9 million votes cast.
Norm Coleman chose to bow out of the race rather than continue the contest taking the fight to the federal courts. It is estimated the two camps have spent more than $1.7 million in legal fees through March, the end of the last FEC reporting period. Rumors abound that Coleman will run for governor of Minnesota next year to replace outgoing Republican Tim Pawlenty.
With the Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) jump over to his natural home with the Democrats, the swearing in of Franken will bring the Democrats to the magic 60-vote, filibuster proof majority in the Senate.
Yet there are a few silver linings in the storm clouds.
Franken is a former comedian and writer of such literary tomes as, Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations and Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right. He was also a radio talk show host for the failed Air America venture, an unsuccessful attempt by the far left to make inroads into the talk radio market. Therein lay a target-rich environment for direct quotes of his extremist politics.
Franken brings a high profile, outspoken demeanor along with his extremist views to a Democrat majority in the Senate desperately trying to prove to America right now that theyre not really as extreme as the Obama/Pelosi legislation theyre passing. Frankens presence could make matters markedly worse. The glare of cameras his first days in Washington after the 4th of July break will offer him a huge platform to spout his extremist views from sea to shining sea. Combine that scenario with his oversize ego and Franken just may not be able to help himself.
Further, Frankens penchant for foot-in-mouth disease could very well rival Vice President Joe Biden performance on the gaff-o-meter. Yet Frankens abrasive style does not lend itself to the goofball likeability factor sometimes enjoyed by Biden. (Stand up, Joe!)
America is grappling with the consequences of the lack of any pretense of fiscal discipline from the White House and the Democrat Congress. The Democrats have spent us into near bankruptcy, maxed out the taxpayers credit and are poised to raise taxes on an unprecedented scale through a national energy tax, possible national VAT sales taxes and health care taxes, to name just a few. For conservatives looking forward to 2010 with great anticipation, Frankens presence could be the cherry on top of the sundae.
Unless the powers that be in the Senate can put a big, fat muzzle on his mouth, Al Frankens brand of politics and caustic deportment would make him the poster child for everything thats wrong in America in 2010. The Senates own Rosie ODonnell.
Boehner Reads the Cap and Trade Amendment
Last week on the House floor during closing statements before the vote on the disastrous cap and trade national energy tax, Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) the House Republican leader used his traditional unlimited time to read the 300-page amendment to the Democrats massive energy tax legislation that was dropped into the bill at 3:09 am on the morning right before the vote. Boehner provided colorful commentary while exposing some of the more egregious elements Democrats tried to hide in the last-minute amendment they hoped no one would have time to read.
My colleagues, weve been through a very difficult time in our economy, Boehner said from the House floor. Weve had the great economic shocks of last fall, and weve seen unemployment climbing month after month after month. It is now at some 9.4 percent.
Earlier this year we passed a 1,100-page bill that no one read. It was supposed to be about putting the American people back to work again. It was supposed to be about stimulating our economy. And all we heard during that debate was about jobs, jobs and jobs. Its pretty clear that what the bill really ended up being was nothing more than spending, spending and more spending, because since that bill passed, some 1.7 million Americans have lost their jobs. So when we look at the legislation that continues to go through here, the American people are seeing an awful lot of spending, an awful lot of money going to government, but theyre not seeing new jobs.
Now we come to what I believe is the most profound piece of legislation that has come to the floor of this House in the last 100 years. Its hard to say in the first 6 months of the new Congress that this could be the defining vote and the defining bill for this Congress, but I really, truly believe that this is the defining bill.

Bring on the clowns.
Remember Sarah Palin begging for permission to campaign in Minnesota, Michigan and other states written off by Johnny Mac and his brain trust ... I can’t help but wonder if the Cuda couldn’t have helped win local races like this for people like Coleman.
Franken is a anti-American, liberal kook! He’ll ALWAYS be a LOSER to me.
Thanks, Minnesota, for foisting this frothing dress-up clown on the nation.
I can only hope that the voters in Minnesota who voted for this JERK will be the foremost sufferers of the abuse that’s sure to come from it.
Freepers need to taunt Stuart every chance we get. Sooner or later he will loose it in a public way. Maybe try direct violence. Then he will be toast. We need to think of ways to get in his face.
Fixed it.
Franken now needs to learn what “living under the microscope” is ALL ABOUT!
Will the media do it? hell no.
We need a new conservative magazine.
So it seems Iran has more honest elections than Minnesota.
Every time I see that in writing it's like a kick to the n***...
Franken Declared Winner - America declared loser.
That has to be a first for him.
I can't imagine he's ever been considered a "winner" in his life.
His role in Trading Places is more the real Stuart.
Franken is a head case. He will self destruct. Won’t hurt to egg him on tho... ;-)
The professional clowns are already firmly entrenched in the chambers of congress. The rest are now unemployed, due to the extreme and overpowering comedic lethargy sweeping across our landscape. Sorry, but sadness now reigns. Anger comes next.
This guy will be arrested for assault before his term is up.
He’s a hot-head that can’t control himself.
That’s why he seeks to control others.
"Because I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and dogonit, people like me!"
Even in the best character he ever did he was deluded.
