Officials: Clinton Pressed Obama to Take Harder Line on Iran [the President Resisted]

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton urged President Obama for two days to toughen his language on Iran before he did so,

and then was surprised when he condemned Iran's crackdown on demonstrators last week, the Washington Times reported administration officials as saying.

At his June 23 news conference, Obama said he was "appalled and outraged" by Iranian behavior and "strongly condemned" the violence against anti-government demonstrators.

Up until then, Obama and other administration officials had taken a softer line, expressing "deep concern" about the situation and calling on Iran to "respect the dignity of its own people."

Behind the scenes, the officials, who spoke on the condition that they not be named because they were discussing internal deliberations, said Clinton had been advocating the stronger U.S. response, but the president resisted.

When he finally took her advice, the aides said, he did so without informing her first.

This was the first known example of awkwardness between the two former rivals for the Democratic nomination for president since they made up following Obama's election.

The disagreement also gave some insight into the Obama administration's foreign policy decision-making process five months into its term.

The officials said they were familiar with the language Obama used in his news conference because

it was sent to the State Department a day earlier, but that Clinton did not know until he uttered the words that he would choose that moment to make them public.

When he finally took her advice

.
Because President Øbama didn’t know how to respond in the first place, he had always got to vote ‘present’ before

A telling leak from the State Department. Maybe things aren’t all sweetness & light in Obamaland.

“Obama thought he was the oppressed one, that's what he was learning for 20 years in Rev Wright's sermons”

There's a ton of truth in what you state. This is the big lie that keeps getting told, that all the problems in the black community are attributable to oppression and prejudice. We've let this concept go unchallenged for a long time, and it is now gospel in many circles. Obama went to a private school, high profile universities, and as far as I can tell never had to do much in the way of physical labor in his life. Doesn't seem like oppression to me.

I never thought I would ever see the day that I would prefer to see Hillary as POTUS.

Community organizers do whatever they want, whenever they want. Silly Hillary, thinking her advice matters.

Obama is not ready for primetime. But then you already knew that...

Hey Hillary, he won. Get over it. He doesn’t have to ask loosers for advice.

Interesting. Makes you wonder what other disagreements people in the administration have with The One. Is the absurd Obama policy on Honduras, for example, HIS POLICY alone and everyone in the administration (and the press) is simply towing his tyrannical, anti-freedom line?

Yeh. I never could figure out why Hillary would give up her Senate seat & media spotlight & go to work for the Obama administration. Starting to make sense now, though, seeing this bit of chisel work from within.

Well, that’s certainly what she wants you to think. She’s just leaking
info to expose Obama to criticism. If she thought it was to her advantage to say
he was too harsh, she would have done that too. LIke it turns out she
was really a Yankees fan growing up in Chicago.

Hillary should resign ... right now over one of these key issues. Then run against this jerk in 2012 with an “inside view” ... she could take the “conservative” ... lets keep America, America ... line and people would vote for her. The libs have got to have some doubts about this guy, she would be a great pressure releif valve, and I think she could win.

Too soon.

I suggested in January that HRC's plan was two years as Secretary of State then bail, wait three months then turn on the, by then, acknowledged disaster in the WH.

She has the domestic chops already, two years running State would give her all she'd need in FP. the dims woiuld be looking for somebody to save them from their saviour. HRC would be first in line.

Now, if we could just find somebody...

0bama envisions himself in the role of “president for life” just like all the thugs he’s propping up worldwide.

Well, she is a vicious bitch, but I don’t know that she’s tougher
than Obama. It is obviously to her advantage for people to think so.
I’m glad state is leaking this though. I’d love to see screaming match
between Hilary and Rahm.

Clinton will start to ramp up her criticism of Obama from here on out in the hopes she can attain the office.
