Likud Knesset Member Danny Danon has called on party leader and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to boycott Wednesday evening’s annual U.S. Independence Day reception. He said that most coalition MKs will join him to protest what he called American contempt towards Israel.

Given the long history of these alliances, I don't think they will take very long to rebuild, provided it doesn't take too long to stop the destruction and put the right architects in charge. Unfortunately, the damage caused by emboldening enemies may be harder to undo than the damage to alliances. We largely recovered our alliances after the Carter years and after the disgraceful end of the Vietnam war, but the image of the US as a wavering adversary has hurt us deeply.

Don't think that Netanyahu will follow up on MK Danon’s suggestion. So what if Netanyahu and other top Israelis attend the 4th of July event at the American Embassy? Netanyahu lived in the US for many years, knows the significance of what the 4th of July represents, and basically shares the ideals of the US’s Founding Fathers. Israel can make its dissatisfaction with the Obama Administration known in other ways. Let cooler heads in Israel prevail on this one.

IMO, Netanyahu will attend - as Israel’s public face he’s more-or-less obliged to avoid overt insult to our nominal POTUS. I’ll be very curious to see how he handles the MK’s, though.
