The announcement in a press release from Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) reveals that $16.5 Million in Waterway Conservation Recovery Funding will pay for 6 projects in Washington State. It is estimated that the six projects will support 115 jobs.
Breakdown of funding:
Northwest Straits Marine Conservation Foundation: Project/Funding: Removal of Derelict Fishing Gear in Puget Sound: Remove over 200 metric tons of marine debris, including net removals. (Mt. Vernon) $4,595,369
The Nature Conservancy: Project/Funding: Fisher Slough Marsh Restoration: Restore 60 acres of the Skagit River floodplain by replace antiquated agriculture floodgates and restoring 15 miles of critical habitat for Chinook, Chum and the endangered Coho salmon. (Burlington) $5,207,300
Upper Skagit Indian Tribe: Project/Funding: Hansen Creek Floodplain Restoration: Excavate and reconnect 140 acres of forested floodplain habitat and install woody debris for endangered Chinook, Coho and Steelhead salmon. (Milltown) $988,915
Tulalip Tribes of Washington: Project/Funding: Qwuloolt Estuary Restoration: Restore 350 acres of wetland to fish passage for Chinook salmon on the lower Snohomish River and its surrounding tidal floodplain by remove levees, excavating channels and planting native vegetation and trees. (Marysville) $2,000,000
Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe: Project/Funding: Elwha River Floodplain Restoration: Restore the floodplain of the lower Elwha River through the removal of dikes and culverts, re-vegetation and invasive species control. (Port Angeles) $2,003,653
Lummi Nation: Project/Funding: Smuggler’s Slough Nooksack River Restoration: Raise a roadway and reconnect tidal exchange for 490 acres of Smuggler’s Slough channel that will flow to a restored salt marsh and eelgrass habitat in Lummi Bay. (Bellingham) $1,733,803

at least the western part.
You gotta consider the fact that some bigwig government bureaucrat making upwards of $1.0 mil/year will be overseeing the projects and doling out money to unnamed people “vital” to the project’s success. The workers will then be paid the usual $14.50/ hr.
Give the salmon and wildlife jobs? Wow! What a concept!
and not a job or project in central or eastern Washington....
Notice the money is headed to alot of the tribes that run casinos?
Unlike 22 other states that collect millions from revenue sharing agreements for tribal gambling, Washington gets no money from tribal casinos under the compact that Gov. Gregoire and other WA dem politicians negotiated.
The state’s arrangement, which gives the governor power to approve or reject gambling agreements with the tribes and allows those same tribes to contribute to political campaigns.
Washington State tribes have pumped more than $600,000 in campaign contributions into the state Democratic Party since 2004.
The state could have received from $40 million to more than $140 million annually.
The money would have been dedicated to projects of “mutual importance to the state and tribes” such as Puget Sound cleanup, salmon protection, culvert expansion and transportation projects.
Annual revenue of tribal casinos in Washington state:
2005: $1.02 BILLION
2006: $1.19 BILLION
2007: $1.34 BILLION
So instead of the tribes paying for the projects with the gaming revenue they should be sharing, we are paying for these projects with the Porkulus money.
The removal of dykes, culverts, the reestablishment of salt marshes and wetlands will no doubt divert hundreds of thousands of acres
from commercial private development.
