The Pentagon is considering how it might ease the "don't ask, don't tell" law requiring gays to keep quiet about their sexual identity or face expulsion from the military, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday. "One of the things we're looking at is, is there flexibility in how we apply this law," Gates told reporters aboard a military plane.
The Pentagon boss said he discussed the issue last week with US President Barack Obama and that there also has been discussion among senior military and legal counsel about possible changes in how they apply the law, which he described as "very restrictive."
"We're talking about how do we move forward on this, achieve this objective which is changing the policy."
Gates added: "What I discovered when I got into it was it's a very restrictive law. It doesn't leave much to the imagination, or a lot of flexibility."
The defense secretary said one possible modification might be consider the circumstances under which a service member is "outed" in determining whether or not he or she must leave the military.
Gates offered as an example "when we're given information from someone with vengeance in mind or blackmail, somebody who has been jilted.

So really this boils down to Obama wanting the Pentagon to ignore the law to placate the gays without having to get rid of it entirely and face a potential political firestorm...what a piece of work.

Personally I think it worked better when I enlisted. They asked you point blank if you were homosexual. if you said yes it was hasta la vista then and there. And if you lied and were later found out then your enlistment was fraudulent and out you were thrown.

The solution, for Obama, is easy... Throw out the law? but Zero needs to walk the tightrope between his supporters and the American public... Eventually he is going to fall..

This couldn't have anything to do with Lindsey Graham being 'outed' a couple weeks ago by that wacky and vengeful lesbian politician in SC, now could it(1)? Being an Air Force Col. and JAG Officer(2) he could lose any and all benefits if its confirmed he's gay.

You're right about it being none of the government's business. But Don't Ask, Don't Tell does have a gray area in it that wasn't in the works when I enlisted.

Now the government knows with out asking or the homosexual telling. What do you do now? I think that gives too much leeway to activists wanting to have a flagrant homosexual serving.
Ever been on a ship for six months? Doubt it or you wouldn't make that statement.
Here is an alternative concept, taken from the text of the law: “Homosexuality is incompatible with military service”. This worked just fine during the Reagan Administration.
Ummm .... What do you think a marriage ceremony is? It's a public declaration that "Henceforth, Joe and Jane will be sleeping together. Everybody else keep your hands off!!!" Should Joe and Jane start producing offspring, little doubt will be left as to their "sexual preference".

So are they going to ease the “sexual relations within the ranks” rule too? Or will homosexuals be granted special privileges?
Sort of the same policy the administration takes when they learn that a member hasn't paid taxes.
Being blackmailed has ALWAYS been a factor in keeping closeted homosexuals out of spheres of influence.
Blackmail itself is a crime.
