Rio Rancho police arrested the head of the Santa Fe Police Department's Internal Affairs Division early Sunday morning and charged him with aggravated drunken driving, according to a police report.
Lt. Stephen Ryan, 44, was pulled over about 1:40 a.m. at the intersection of Golf Course Road and Southern Boulevard in Rio Rancho after an officer saw his 2002 Toyota Tundra pickup weaving, the report says. He was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated and failure to maintain a traffic lane after Ryan refused to take a breath test, according to the report.
Ryan was placed on administrative leave Monday pending an internal investigation into the incident and the outcome of his court case, Santa Fe Deputy Police Chief Abram Anaya said.

‘aggravated’ What does that mean? We don’t have that here for an OUIL.
He was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated and failure to maintain a traffic lane after Ryan refused to take a breath test.
If your first drunk driving offense is an aggravated DWI, a minimum of 48 hours in jail is mandatory in addition to the other penalties. Aggravated DWI includes driving with an alcohol level of .16% or greater, causing bodily injury while DWI, or refusing to submit to a chemical test while DWI.

Unfortunately, in too many cases that seems to be true. How else do we have drivers arrested who have a history of between 6-12 DWI arrests and they are out on our roads and streets?
Yes, I did. We have friends and family who used to live in NM. I’m sorry to see that the DWI situation hasn’t changed.
According to a judge in my neck of the woods, juries are also a problem. A lot of folks sitting on juries tend to think there but for the grace of God, and are lenient with drunk drivers.
My guess is that this guy wasn’t well liked among his peers.

Ya think? lol, he’ll still get off with a slap on the wrist, LEO’s are above these laws.
He’s as good as gone. “Administrative leave” is standard police department policy. They’re going to fire him. You can’t have the head of IA breaking the same laws that he fires other officers for breaking.
