Dems Lead For Now in Race for Open Ohio Senate Seat

Democrats Jennifer Brunner and Lee Fisher both hold leads over Republican Rob Portman in match-ups to fill the seat of retiring GOP Sen. George Voinovich, although neither so far seems to be firing the imaginations of the state’s voters, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted June 17.19.

Brunner, the Secretary of State, leads Portman 40 percent to 32 percent with 29 percent undecided, and Fisher, the lieutenant governor, leads 41 percent to 32 percent with 27 percent undecided. Portman was a six-term congressman who left the House to take posts in the Bush administration.

However, those who view Brunner favorably are tied at 32 percent each with 36 percent not sure. Fisher’s numbers are nearly identical at 32 percent to 31 percent and 36 percent unsure. Brunner and Fisher also match up closely when it comes to their favorability ratings among just Democrats. Portman is viewed unfavorably by 34 percent to 22 percent with 44 percent not sure. More than half of independents have no opinion of the two Democrats, and more than 40 percent of them declaring themselves undecided in match-ups against Portman.

This race is unusual in that none of the major party candidates are all that well-known. The popularity of Obama or lack of it will be more important in this Senate race than others.

Probably still some residue from the bob Taft era. As the months go by, I'm sure the many undecideds (indies) will break more to the Portman ticket. Nationwide the indies seem to be falling out of love with zero fairly fast. Encouraged that Kasich is already in a dead heat with Strickland in the Guv's race

There's a lot of reasons, but I think the biggest one is the people that were most inclined to vote Republican have been leaving the state for the last 20+ years. Ohio has some great colleges, but a growing percentage of those students are heading for greener pastures after graduation - mostly to the Southeast and Southwest.

It's leaving Ohio with an aging and increasingly uneducated population. This is not a healthy combination. Plus, Ohio actually has a fairly long history of electing Democrat Senators, Metzenbaum and Glenn come to mind immediately, but there have been others. Whomever is the GOP nominee will be facing a very uphill battle.

Thanks for the news. Out west, it’s the opposite- Rocky Mountain states are being invaded by California liberals fleeing the wreckage that their voting habits helped create.

The ACU probably has his old voting record ratings. Portman hasn’t held elective office since 2005, when he took a job with the Bush Administration.

The demographics with regard to this are mixed. In the long run, they favor us. But in the short run, they favor the left. In about 20 years, you’ll see the country turn more conservative- if we still have a country.
