Mich. in talks to possibly take Calif. prisoners

By KATHY BARKS HOFFMAN Associated Press Writer Monday, Jun. 29, 2009

LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm sent a letter Monday to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger formally offering to house - for a fee - some of the Golden State's prison inmates.

Michigan plans to close two prisons by the end of September: the Standish Maximum Correctional Facility about 145 miles northwest of Detroit and a medium-security prison in Muskegon, located in central Michigan.

Michigan could save the jobs of about half of the 1,000 prison guards it plans to lay off by Oct. 1 if California accepts the offer, and California could alleviate some of its prison overcrowding.

California corrections spokesman Seth Unger said Monday that his state plans to send a team in mid-July to look over the prisons and determine if a deal makes sense.

The state has 7,600 of its 168,000 inmates in private correctional facilities in Arizona, Tennessee, Mississippi and Oklahoma, but so far none are in state-run prisons outside California.

It got my hopes up to see a state contemplating warmaking on CA... but no it’s merely a prisoner exchange! ;)

a medium-security prison in Muskegon, located in central Michigan.

For the record, Muskegon in in West Michigan, not Central Michigan.

So Michigan lets its own prisoners out, because they can’t afford to house them, and brings in California’s?

Outsourcing Kalifornicate’s prisoners to the equally union constipated state of Michigan — makes no sense and wouldn’t provide a significant cost reduction...

Now then - outsourcing our prisoners to Mexico, Columbia, Peru or Belize would provide significant savings and deterrent.

this reminds me of when Bulgaria would seek economic aid from Romania under the old iron-curtain Comecon system

You are right on the mark.

Kalifornicators need to cut a deal with MEXICO and outsource their prisoners to there.

going to be an interesting summer. Most States emptying prisons, most cities cutting police and fire.

Stock up on ammo and marsh mellows.

Yup, we released lots of ours so we could take California’s.

Just the threat of a prisoner being shipped to one of our upper peninsula facilities (10 hours from Detroit, brutal winters and mosquitoes that have inner-bred with the ducks) will keep a Michigan inmate in line; I think that it would have an even bigger impact on a California inmate!

To say nothing of shrinking their Chorizo to the point they're the laughing stock of the shower room.....only Bernie Madoff would have tinier Vienna Sausage.

...and leave me here by my lonesome? We are going to be the most bea-u-ti-ful penal colony on the planet, you don't want to wait?

(If my family hadn't been entrenched here for over 140 years, we'd be moving, too.)

Couldn’t the Detroit City Council chambers potentially qualify as a prison?

That is right. And they aren’t sending many parolees back if they violate. that would include violations that even a few months back would have flopped them. Michigan will get interesting. The prisons have errored in early releases in the past, and had disasterous results. They really cracked down. But the current prison closings will be a crime against lawful citizens.

Is Motown still Motown?

Don’t forget the no-see’ums, and black flies. What miserable creatures. Yeah, put them in the upper. You can leave the gates open and guard the roads. Many men have gone crazy after a night in those woods. Nothing there, just swampy, treefallen, thickett woods.
