Central Falls police take in 170 guns in buyback program (..and the world's a safer place/libthink)

CENTRAL FALLS — The city’s firearms buyback program this weekend was an apparent success.

At least 170 rifles, shotguns and pistols were turned in on Saturday at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility’s training center, on High Street. Mayor Charles D. Moreau paid $50 for each, for a total of at least $8,500 — all of it out of his own pocket, the city said.

The guns were turned in during a three-hour period that began at 8 a.m. It could not be determined Sunday how many more guns, if any, were collected between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the program concluded.

Last week, Moreau, who is running for reelection, issued a news release announcing the program and said that no one would be questioned about where he or she obtained the gun being turned in. The hope, he said, was to reduce gun violence in this impoverished one-square mile city.

“Anytime you can take a gun off the city streets, you reduce the potential for violent criminal activity,” Moreau said in the release.

I wish my town had one of those. I have a crappy OLD Taurus Arms .38 revolver that I really need to unload for a nice little .22 automatic.

Lucky people!

I have two beat up old firearms I would gladly trade in for $50 each and use the $100 towards a brand new firearm.

I understand these efforts are supporting a thriving black market in old, busted shotguns, rust-pitted revolvers without firing pins and 22 cal rifles used in the past to hammer tent stakes into the ground.

Hope and change all around, then!

You gotta wonder how many of these people, and others nationwide, are turning in rare, old collector’s items for which they could get hundreds - if not thousands - if sold privately; think Antiques Roadshow for firearms.

I wonder how many of these firearms are stolen by folks that will just pocket the money and go out and steal more guns.

Yeah, you also got to wonder how many of these firearms are going home with the local LEOs and city officials.

Some guys have all the luck. I want to do that too, but they never do it locally.

I would like to ask this touchy-feeley lib mayor —how many gang bangers turned in their guns?? You got a lot of law abiding people to give up their protection. Hope you are proud.

This is really insignificant. Boama caused the sale of one million new firearms in three months and the scotus appointment will probably start it over again.

This will make a fantastic anthropological study in coming years. I can title the tome now:

American Animism In the Early 21st Century - The institutionalized superstition that objects cause depravity and violence in post-rational America, and how that psychosis was used by the extinct Democrat Tribe to rule, until their own violent extermination.

Future historians, assuming there are any of course, will look back on our time and call them “The Crazy Years”.

And if guns really caused crime, why aren’t we seeing a spike from all of the firearms purchased since Obama was elected?

As usual, gun control theory has more holes than Swiss Cheese.

Mayor Charles D. Moreau paid $50 for each,

Hope they run the serial numbers to see if any are stolen. That way they can charge the mayor with possession and trafficking of stolen property.

Suppose you turn in a gun and it finds its way into the wrong hands... say, it becomes a murder weapon in an unsolved case.

Would that lead investigators to your door? Is that a reasonable concern, or is that being overly paranoid?
