MI in talks about California Prisoners

LANSING, Mich. -- Empty Michigan prisons could become home to hundreds of California inmates if a deal can be struck.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm sent a letter Monday to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger formally offering space for some of the inmates California is running out of room to house to Michigan.

Michigan plans to close two prisons by the end of September.

They are the Standish Maximum Correctional facility about 145 miles northwest of Detroit and a medium-security prison in Muskegon, about 45 miles northwest of Grand Rapids.

Michigan could save the jobs of about half of the 1,000 prison guards it plans to lay off by Oct. 1 if California accepts the offer.

A request for comment was left with Schwarzenegger's office Monday.

Jackson was always a little...difficult...at times. A good town, but very hard on those who have lived there their whole lives. I so miss some of those I knew.

Maybe they should start giving the Detroit thugs jail time instead of probation.......

I’ve never lived in jackson but I’ve lived all over the county. I grew up in hanover but lived out by waterloo and now live near Napoleon.

I read today that California has the highest cost per inmate per year, in the United States. The California cost is $45,000. If they could pay other states, with empty prisons, about $25,000 for each, it would be a win-win situation.

Except our dear governor is RELEASING prisoners because of our huge budget hole and 14.1% unemployment rate. She's also decided to lay off 100 brand new state police officers fresh out of the academy.

Putting Club Gitmo terrorists in the frozen UP is one thing. Taking California's trash is another.

Actually I think its easier for the welfare cases to follow an incarcerated relative. As I understand it they claim hardship and get a fast track through the system.

You mean we'll have to hire even more than the 200 "temporary" food stamp workers about to undergo state training? Wonderful. We don't have time limits, either. Why should they go back to the west coast when there's less competition for benefits here?

She doesn’t really help the ‘dumb blonde’ stereotypes. I like to think that after this, the Rpeublicans will have an easy tinme of it as long as they don’t mess it up with this infighting.

I think we really only have two potential GOP candidates for governor so that will work in our favor too.

From a financial standpoint it makes a certain amount of sense, but here in Lansing we are reaping the "rewards" of prisoner outsourcing on a small scale. Ingham County has been selling bedspace in our jail to other MI counties. The prisoners get here, begin making contacts with the local criminal element, and decide not to leave. For them, Lansing is a "fresh start," but not in a good way--they may have worn out their welcome in Oakland County, but they're newbies here. I have no reason to believe that won't happen with cross-continent criminals.

They'll just have to get used to the snow.

With the job climate the way it is, do you blame her?

Good to know. The next step is for us to outsource our prisons to Russia, where the inmates might decide the Gulag is a good stepping stone...
