U.S. beef recall expanded, 18 illnesses suspected

CHICAGO (Reuters) – A Colorado meat company is expanding a recall of beef due to possible contamination by E.coli O157:H7 bacteria after an investigation found 18 illnesses may be linked to the meat, the company and the U.S. Agriculture Department said on Sunday.

Greeley, Colorado-based JBS-Swift Beef Co is voluntarily expanding its June 24 recall to include about 380,000 lbs of assorted beef products, for a total recall of about 421,000 lbs, USDA and the company said.

The affected beef was produced on April 21 and was distributed nationally and internationally.

"The contamination may have come from further processing by other companies," Chandler Keys, JBS spokesman, said on Sunday.

USDA said the recalled products are typically used for steaks and roasts rather than ground beef. However, it said some of the beef may have been processed into ground products by other companies.

It is unlikely the recall will be expanded further, and JBS will be contacting customers that received the beef to learn how the product was distributed, said Keys.

The contamination was investigated by USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I hope the brisket I have cooking isn’t part of the recall.

About fifteen years ago I worked at this plant, in the USDA. They were killing 6 beef per minute. Carcasses would fly by the line so fast you could barely check them.

The facility was pretty good and well-designed, but you had uncooperative management, Mexican workers with attitudes, and union-thug food inspectors who didn't have hygiene in mind. The supervisory vet med officer (GS-13), their (usually her) main goal was getting promoted out of there to a desk job in DC or a circuit supervisor gig.

With the implementation of HACCP the inspectors would check more paperwork than meat, ie: plant QC initials that "no fecal material noted" and some fake lab tests. Positives for O157 don't surprise me in the least.

I was sure glad to see that place in the rear-view mirror.

It wouldn’t matter anyway, roasts and steaks, even if they are contaminated are fairly safe because only the outside would have been exposed and even if you have rare meat the outside will have gotten to a high enough temp to kill the bacteria.

Whew, there’s a pork roast in the pressure cooker (for BBQ sandwiches) as I read about the beef recall. Need to check the two beef roasts I bought at the same time.....

True. My brisket cooks for 4 1/2 hours. Besides that, I have a “steel” tummy.

I’m pretty sure that I’m immune to ecoli because I have been exposed to fresh cow manure all my adult life.

I have no doubt about that...Companies love their low wage illegal labor...How can ya go wrong with labor force that think company benefits mean a 5 minute break.

Profits regardless of consequences.

It’s a brisket. If you cook it throughly you should have no issues.

I believe that the proper cooking of the meat would kill the bacteria.

Santuary cities are the result of the Democrat Party.

It is the Democrat Party facilitating this invasion of America
and the murder of Americans.

So, how long have you been in politics, Senator?
