The forbidding arithmetic of healthcare reform (Disaster in Massachusetts, cont.)
Boston Fishwrap ^ | 6/28/09 | Vennochi

+ THE FUZZY math behind the Massachusetts universal healthcare law is starting to add up - just as Washington studies the law as a possible model for the nation.

Because of a recession-related drop in state revenues and a surge in enrollment by the recently unemployed, the truth is emerging at an inconvenient time. Massachusetts doesn’t have enough money to pay for the coverage envisioned by the law.

In June, state officials announced they are cutting $100 million from Commonwealth Care, which subsidizes premiums for needy residents. The poorest residents, along with the newest - legal immigrants - will take the hit.

This outcome is not surprising, but it is instructive as President Obama pushes for a national healthcare plan.

On the day that Republican Governor Mitt Romney, for once, made Bay State Democrats happy, by signing the sweeping new healthcare bill into law, the Globe headline said it all: “Joy, worries on healthcare. As Romney signs bill, doubts arise about revenues.’’

In Massachusetts, the numbers never added up, as everyone involved in crafting the new law understood. But for a variety of reasons, ranging from Romney’s presidential aspirations to Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s longstanding commitment to healthcare reform, everyone smiled for the cameras and hoped for the best out of this noble experiment.

A NOBLE EXPERIMENT! Oh, please. It was a typical power grab by typically criminal politicians.

It’s worse than that. I was paying for my grandson’s Blue Cross and under RomneyCare private insurance was apparently indexed to your town and its per capita income. My grandson’s health insurance went from $150/month to $360.

Your post is very important. I hope everyone reads it.

This is the reason our founders wanted the states to be the laboratories of ideas. To prevent them being foisted on the entire nation without a known outcome. And without figuring out smart solutions, btw.

Your post is the #1 reason why the very cynical FDR didn’t DARE attempt to try Social Security first as a state program.

Not only have they fiscally robbed Massachusetts, they have for years morally robbed the state. I live in RI, so I have a good idea as to what happens in the state. I can walk a mile and be in Massachusetts. A lesson to be learned is trying this on a larger stage may even be worse.

If you would be willing to share this with one of the groups fighting Obamacare, I believe it would be VERY useful to them.

Do the math.

Crunch the numbers.

If every single American did that, they would all be appalled and outraged by our insane government spending.

This must end now. It is time to stop the spending, not increase it.

But how are liberals cutting spending? The same way they did before 9/11 - defense spending, intelligence agencies spending and military spending.

If our nation is attacked again, it will be due to this administration and its terrible policies. Oh they will try to blame the p[revious administration somehow but it won’t fly at all and the people will know it.

It is hard for me to even imagine how a “conservative” could enthusiastically support Romney.

The most beautiful and clever thing ever...is watching GWB keeping such a low profile as to be almost invisible.

It’s pushed the attention whore Obama, not only where he wanted to be (front and center) but where he did not want to be:

IN CHARGE AND RESPONSIBLE FROM HERE ON OUT

If it were up to me, GWB, would be quiet until about 2011. That would allow Obama to stew in his own juices, with GWB only a faint memory.

heh

No business, government or person is too big to fail. Michael Jackson was insolvent when he died yet nobody earned more as an entertainer during his career.

Governments can become insolvent and our own federal government is insolvent right now.

We cannot afford what the lunatic politicians are promising.

The more Obummer tries to explain his healthcare ideas, the cap and trade, the climate change bill and all the other shit for brains, half-baked, nutty, loony, insane spending, the worse it makes him look. So keep on talking Obummer. Talk your fool head off. And have members of your administration like Gibbs et al do the same thing because it makes them look like idiots and fools besides.

“It is hard for me to even imagine how a “conservative” could enthusiastically support Romney.”

Romney may have done us the best favor ever by exposing govt. health care as a disaster for the nation before we bankrupt the country trying it.

Be honest about cost in the good times and make sure you can cover it in the bad.

If Hussain were honest about the true cost, people would run screaming into the night. He's got to keep all this secret until it's too late. Once it's passed we'll never get rid of it. And don't fool yourselves into thinking it's unconstitutional SCOTUS will strike it down, or a conservative president will get rid of it..... aint gonna happen. Once it's in it'll be with us until the end of the US as we know it.

Just like social security. It will be around until it goes insolvent and bankrupt which I fear will be sooner rather than later.
