About an hour after Rey Kinney opened his family-owned video game store for business Friday, he was robbed, beaten, nearly shot and had a chunk of his ear bitten off.
Kinney, 27, told Jacksonville police a man entered Games Galore in the Westside Plaza on Normandy Boulevard about 11 a.m. and was requesting a lot of his attention.
As he dealt with the customer, another man came in with a gun and demanded money.
The armed robber ordered Kinney to the floor. As he began to comply, Kinney reached out to slap the gun out of the robber's hand and a struggle ensued.
Kinney said the over-demanding customer he was just assisting then jumped into the fight to help the robber.
An errant bullet was fired, but Kinney somehow managed to take the clip out of the gun.
"I didn't want to get shot," he said. "And I've seen so many cop shows where people get shot afterward. I just wanted to get the gun and get the clip out of it. That's actually why I got my ear bitten off."
Kinney didn't take the ear biting sitting down.
"The guy bit me," he said, "so I bit him back."

Personally I'd rather get the gun and empty the clip. But that's just me.

Presumably empty. Then they still walk out with $10k-$20k worth of merchandise. I can understand him wanting to pack up the business and leave, but how about, at least, keeping a gun or two on the premises?
Hope he doesn’t get Hep from biting that robber.

Whoa, that’s a relief! You certainly wouldn’t want the Police to do anything that’s not safe, ay. Just in case the Bad Guys are still around, it’s best they keep a lo profile and wait until they’re sure the Bad Guys leave. Then it’s safe.

That’s not very fair. Cops come onto a chaotic scene and don’t who from whom. Common sense and police procedure say you stop the action and hold everyone until you know exactly what is up.
Next time you are baing robbed, call a Libertarian.

The guts of the story is this:
Hardworking Sikh family man gets robbed and shot in his liquor store. IIRC it was a .22 round in the chest.
Emergency services were called and responded quickly. Police arrived and kept the abulance staff away from the injured man, even tho’ the thieves had long since fled.
Members of the public were wandering in and out of the store meanwhile. Some of them imploring the emergency services for help.
Eventually, after about 1/2 hour of fooling around by the police, Mr Singh expired.
In all a pretty shabby showing.

Interestingly, in the States they would have been faster about getting medical help to a suspected criminal than a victim.
In NZ our police are routinely unarmed when they patrol — tho’ they have access to firearms in the boot of their car.
We as citizens do not have the Right to Keep and Bear Arms as you have in the US, neither do we have Castle Laws or a meaningful right to defend our property. Indeed our Courts tend to take a dim view of citizens defending themselves when they have the option to wait for the police, and they sometimes penalize those who do.
Given that context it is incumbent upon our Police to take swift action to protect our citizens and to do the “dangerous stuff” for us. Either that or they should sit back and leave the dangerous stuff to the citizenry.
What isn’t acceptable is the status quo, where the criminals are kept safe at the expense of the private citizen. That doesn’t work well at all.
Well, I should learn not to apply US standards and procedures to you, our friends and allies.
And we may soon be in your shoes, if our current fuhrer and his reichstag have their way.
I can relate to that.
Several years ago someone tried to steal my purse. A good chewing on his arm ensued.
He finally withdrew his attempt. I didn’t realize I had done such damage until a few minutes and I was on my way again when I tasted blood.
HIV tests showed I was okay.
