In a wide-ranging midday press conference, President Obama took on Republican critics of his stance on Iran, directly targeting former rival Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and saying, "I am the president of the United States."
Obama, who has been accused by McCain and other Republicans of being too timid throughout the unrest following Iran's presidential elections, has gradually taken a firmer stance in the days following the election.
. . . . .
"The Iranian people can speak for themselves," Obama said in the James S. Brady Briefing Room. "That is precisely what has happened these last few days. In 2009, no iron fist is strong enough to shut off the world from bearing witness to the peaceful pursuit of justice. Despite the Iranian governments efforts to expel journalists and isolate itself, powerful images and poignant words have made their way to us through cell phones and computers, and so we have watched what the Iranian people are doing."
When asked if his tougher talk was influenced by critics like McCain and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Obama smiled and said, "What do you think?
"I think John McCain has genuine passion about many of these international issues," Obama said, adding that they share a desire to see free speech respected. "But only I'm the president of the United States.
"Members of Congress, they've got their constitutional duties, and I'm sure they'll carry them out in a way they think is appropriate," Obama said. "I'm the president of the United States, and I'll carry out my responsibilities the way I think is appropriate."

OTOH, why does he find it neccessary to have to constantly remind himself and others he is president? I don’t recall Bush publically reaffirming his position during his terms. freudianinsecurityatplay i’d guess.
OMG, what blessing that would have been.
He has exhibited an extraordinary lack of knowledge about our history as a nation in his Cairo address, especially.
Perhaps this narcissist is so unable to sustain any criticism that he has to whine "nanny nanny poo poo, go and step in doo doo...I AM the KING, uh, er, uh, uh President so STFU!"
I do not think this underqualified jerk understands that he works for you and me and all of America. He is the employee charged with first and foremost KEEPING US SAFE...not taking our money to better control our lives.
Great Picture !!! (#48)
Prove it!
True
Sounds like personality traits of most Liberals .. mostly the MSM .....
That socialist bastard is not my president.
Wait, wait, wait good lord jim sorry to rub everyone the wrong way but he was elected by acorn or not. If we had someone stronger than John Mclaim then maybe we could have done something. I’m getting sick of being accused of being a turncoat, I Voted rupub in Va. and lost, I voted repub in national and lost. What, you want me to take up arms today and go to work? good lord sometimes we protest to much. I have a family and I am not going to start shooting people today.
WOW!
That is very powerful, Phil!
He probably does a better job at that than Zero does as president.
True, but G.W. Bush being the President didn't stop people like Obama from making these same sorts of criticisms about his foreign policy. Heck, how is this any different than Bush's oft-mocked statement that he was "The decider?"
Barack Obama may be the biggest hypocrite in Washington today, which is as awe-inspiring an achievement as being the best baseball player in the Hall at Cooperstown.
Uhhhhhh YES he IS!!!!!
