In a wide-ranging midday press conference, President Obama took on Republican critics of his stance on Iran, directly targeting former rival Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and saying, "I am the president of the United States."
Obama, who has been accused by McCain and other Republicans of being too timid throughout the unrest following Iran's presidential elections, has gradually taken a firmer stance in the days following the election.
. . . . .
"The Iranian people can speak for themselves," Obama said in the James S. Brady Briefing Room. "That is precisely what has happened these last few days. In 2009, no iron fist is strong enough to shut off the world from bearing witness to the peaceful pursuit of justice. Despite the Iranian governments efforts to expel journalists and isolate itself, powerful images and poignant words have made their way to us through cell phones and computers, and so we have watched what the Iranian people are doing."
When asked if his tougher talk was influenced by critics like McCain and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Obama smiled and said, "What do you think?
"I think John McCain has genuine passion about many of these international issues," Obama said, adding that they share a desire to see free speech respected. "But only I'm the president of the United States.
"Members of Congress, they've got their constitutional duties, and I'm sure they'll carry them out in a way they think is appropriate," Obama said. "I'm the president of the United States, and I'll carry out my responsibilities the way I think is appropriate."

You nailed it!!!
Wow, that seems to be his counterargument to everything now! He may be the current occupant of the oval office, but he’s still an ass.
And brother, you suck at it. FYI, you took the wrong tack with Iran and you cannot undo that now.
Insecurity and immaturity. Sad.
He's got a chip on his shoulder from his insecurity. He knows that he's not qualified to be the President.
That’s funny - you don’t act like a president.
You act more like a Paris Hilton wannabe....
Obama is looking older and older these days.
At this rate, in four years, he’ll look like Sanford.
Hey Barry you do know the President is a temporary position don’t you?? You WILL be voted out in 2012..(GOD WILLING).....and relegated to the ash heap of history with Jimmah....Maybe you and Carter can go build houses in some third world country and leave us alone!!
It has got to be hard for him. The world is basically ignoring him now and he cannot understand why.
And a sh*tty one at that. Obama sounds like a child "Stop making fun of me!!!! ... I'm ... I'm ... I'm the President!!!!! WAhhhh!!!!!! "
I happen to think he is really insecure about it as well, and keeps reminding everyone because he likes hearing it and he is a small small man.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. And to follow up- The real POTUS NEVER has to tell anyone who he is. We should all know that, therefore, the Resident of the White House does not have much confidence, does he?
It is what it is. He is the President...for now. Until the sheeple figure out for the 674th time in human history that Socialism, collectiism, authoritarianism doesn't work
Than he won't be President. Hopefully the next Black POTUS will be a conservative.
JRochelle to Obama: “Your’re a dickhead.”
Yes, IF he is an American!
What a wonderful picture! Thank you, you made my day!
[[What McCain should do is ignore him and continue to state his position on Iran.]]
Nah- Obama’s claim that He’s ‘the president of the us’ will be neough to cause McCain to quiver in his boots and tuck tail and cower
