NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Thursday spent considerable time deliberating the impact of less than normal monsoon and its possible effects on the economy and the food situation in the country.

Despite the IMD predicting that July and August would see a recovery in the monsoon, fears were expressed that a repeat of last year — a dip in July rains — coming on the back of very weak June monsoon could be dangerous for the economy.

According to Time magazine, the monsoon is running well behind normal -- and people in some parts of India were arranging ritual marriages with frogs in an attempt to entice it to rain...

However, according to Sify.com, the rains are now beginning to move further into India.

"The southwest monsoon on Friday moved further into central India, bringing heavy rain in many parts of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, an India Meteorological Department official said."

Let's hope & pray it works out...

Two things are at work ~ cool dry air which squeezes the water out of clouds already on the scene ~ and continental cooling in the face of a cooling Sun (for last year and this year).

The continents have to heat up to create powerful updrafts to pull in the monsoon rains from the nearby ocean.

India will continue to suffer drought ~ or, what rain it gets will be at the wrong places in the wrong amounts.

Another year or two of this and you will see tens, if not hundreds of millions of people dropping dead from starvation ~ just like the 19th century.

That would suck: but before that you would see conventional, and maybe nuclear, war.

(Even if you lose 100 million, that's 100 million fewer mouths to feed...)

I fear China will try a combined tac nuke/EMP / cyberattack on the US, followed by simultaneous moves on Tawian and Canada.

NO cheers, unfortunately.

No, China knows where the only other vast plain of prime land for growing grains is located ~ so they’ll bomb somebody else.

India doesn't suffer from drought -- parts do have scanty rains in some years but no drought for years

Parts of India are, in fact, DESERT.
