While being interviewed by ABC News Jake Tapper, potential 2012 GOP presidential candidate Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) admitted that Cheney and Limbaughs leadership probably isnt good for the Republican Party. He said that Limbaugh is one of those leaders, who have had more than their share of time at a front-row seat.
Here is the audio courtesy of Think Progress:
When asked if Cheneys upfront role was good for the GOP, Sanford said, Probably isnt Everybody needs a rest from any of us in the world of politics. Its why I am such a proponent of term limits. For a republic really to work it means you are going to have new life, new perspective, and new ideas coming into that political body on a regular basis. You know, while somebody may have been at the top at one point, to really keep an invigorated political system, youve got to have new voices stepping in and stepping to the plate and giving their opinions. And any time you have some of the senior leaders continuing to lay out their case for what they believe; it probably usurps the voice of new leaders coming in.
On Limbaugh, Sanford said, It is the same deal here. The beauty of America is everybody gets to say their peace. While everybody is entitled to say their peace, I think there is a certain value to some of the folks who have had more than their share of time at front row seat of the table of what comes next in the conservative movement or the Republican Party to defer, to allow other folks coming up through the ranks to give their perspectives I think all of us need to give everybody a little bit more elbow room with regard to making our voice heard. That means if you got a disproportionate microphone, you might want to share it.
What Sanford is really saying is, Get out of the way old men. It is our time now. You are holding the party back by not letting go of the spotlight and letting people like me have a chance. The basic point that Sanford is making is correct. The GOP will never rebuild if the old blood doesnt get out of the way. However, he is making this point for the purpose of clearing the way for his 2012 presidential run.
Sanford has already had a run in with Rush Limbaugh for calling Rush an idiot for saying that he wants Obama to fail. Sanford told Real Clear Politics, I dont want him to fail. Anybody who wants him to fail is an idiot, because it means were all in trouble.
Limbaugh let Sanford off the hook on that one, but I have a feeling that a response will be coming if Sanford keeps it up. After playing his hand all wrong on the stimulus package, Sanford is a long shot for the GOP nomination in 2012, but he is making it clear that he is going to try to muscle his way into the spotlight.
“....I am such a proponent of term limits.”
Well, *someone* will have his wish granted.
Stanford you really are out of touch and show your lack contrition as you knock others!
Digging holes for other will not life you up!
Someone needs to check the mint juleps for hallucinogens in South Carolina. Sanford’s erratic behavior is exactly the reason why Rush and Cheney are right.
At work, huh.
Rush responded quite nicely at length, my friend.
Essentially after he got through mentioning JFK and numerous other peccadillo's by those we all know and are known, all Ds?
Lastly he spoke of a certain stain on a certain blue dress put there by a certain bent peckered character.
"It's just about sex." don'tcha know? LOL
Think Progress wasted its ammo attempting to knock Sandford out of the 2012 race. Now they’ll have to go back to leaking trash against Sarah and Bobby Jindal to keep earning that Soros money.
Yes, request line? I’d like to dedicate this song to my friend Mark. My song to Mark, “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.”
This is two weeks old; why are you posting it now?
Well I defended Sanford yesterday, giving him the benefit of the doubt. But can’t defend adultery. Nor relate to it, having no experience in it.
Sanford didn't seem to mind Rush in the front row helping him win election back in '94 -- I don't recall him boycotting Rush being named an honorary member of Sanford's freshman class in the House, nor opposing Rush being given the *Majority Maker* moniker.
Hypocrite.
Take a hike, Sanford.
His wife knew about this 5 months ago and he hasn’t changed his ways. That tells me more than I want to know about this arrogant... He probably promised her that the affair was over and that he loved his wife dearly and just had a moment of weakness. How sick can one be?
This too rich! This guy admits to a zipper problem and has the balls to say stupid sheet like this! Just shut up and take a walk in the swamps in the Low Country!!!!!!!!!!
Sanford is fast on his way to the sidelines where the only way he will get the time of day will be by criticizing conservatives. The last thing we need is another sleaze bag distracting us. He will resign his governorship shortly, and after that, he should spend the remainder of his life in quiet contemplation of how he can overcome his moral failures.
Don't get me wrong I do like both for the most part. However, Rush went on the Hillary for President campaign as he misjudged Obama. He has ratings to contend with. Rush is all about business. They all can talk the talk, but when it comes time to walk the talk--not interested past their safety net of being a talk show host.
Cheney talks now, but where was he hiding out when Bush was taking all the arrows..in the back?
I have no faith in anyone at this moment.
We just have to fight our battles at the state level.
FReepers do not get paid; but are the real American patriots doing their homework; therefore, making it easy for these tv/radio media hosts to draw hefty paychecks, attend their golf outings, talk about their diets (America could care less) while selling "America" to anyone that will listen, etc.
Talk down the bloggers, but whom do they reference every day?
Actually, backing Hillary in an effort to de-rail Obama almost seems prescient in retrospect.
Sorry I missed it! Thanks for clearing that up.
No one knows the real truth and that’s the way they want it.
Ensign and Sanford have let their Party down-
agreed!
But then there is the party thing which has over the last ten or so years just fallen apart, or become so Democratic as to be unrecognizable from the real democrat party. Though the platform and most members said otherwise, the elected gentry followed the path of politics as usual, and became recognizable RINO’s. If one did not have to have a party affiliation of one of the two primary parties, in order to vote in a Primary election, I would not belong to one of the two parties. I am conservative. Party be damned.
There, I’ve done it, for all the good it will do.
