While being interviewed by ABC News Jake Tapper, potential 2012 GOP presidential candidate Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) admitted that Cheney and Limbaughs leadership probably isnt good for the Republican Party. He said that Limbaugh is one of those leaders, who have had more than their share of time at a front-row seat.
Here is the audio courtesy of Think Progress:
When asked if Cheneys upfront role was good for the GOP, Sanford said, Probably isnt Everybody needs a rest from any of us in the world of politics. Its why I am such a proponent of term limits. For a republic really to work it means you are going to have new life, new perspective, and new ideas coming into that political body on a regular basis. You know, while somebody may have been at the top at one point, to really keep an invigorated political system, youve got to have new voices stepping in and stepping to the plate and giving their opinions. And any time you have some of the senior leaders continuing to lay out their case for what they believe; it probably usurps the voice of new leaders coming in.
On Limbaugh, Sanford said, It is the same deal here. The beauty of America is everybody gets to say their peace. While everybody is entitled to say their peace, I think there is a certain value to some of the folks who have had more than their share of time at front row seat of the table of what comes next in the conservative movement or the Republican Party to defer, to allow other folks coming up through the ranks to give their perspectives I think all of us need to give everybody a little bit more elbow room with regard to making our voice heard. That means if you got a disproportionate microphone, you might want to share it.
What Sanford is really saying is, Get out of the way old men. It is our time now. You are holding the party back by not letting go of the spotlight and letting people like me have a chance. The basic point that Sanford is making is correct. The GOP will never rebuild if the old blood doesnt get out of the way. However, he is making this point for the purpose of clearing the way for his 2012 presidential run.
Sanford has already had a run in with Rush Limbaugh for calling Rush an idiot for saying that he wants Obama to fail. Sanford told Real Clear Politics, I dont want him to fail. Anybody who wants him to fail is an idiot, because it means were all in trouble.
Limbaugh let Sanford off the hook on that one, but I have a feeling that a response will be coming if Sanford keeps it up. After playing his hand all wrong on the stimulus package, Sanford is a long shot for the GOP nomination in 2012, but he is making it clear that he is going to try to muscle his way into the spotlight.
SC is one of the few double digit unemployment states that are Red. Hmmmm. Most are Blue due to liberal policy and tax strangulation.
Wow talk about self destruction!!!!!! I guess he was a democrat all along.
Now there’s an article well past its sell-by date.
My gosh..after reading his comments on Rush and especially t.Cheney, and reading his thoughts...I am not so sure that this trip was a bad thing. This man is obviously not a bright bulb and perhaps it is providence that has caused this creepy man’s true brain to be brought into the spotlight.
Wait till Rush has a chance to respond!
Hey Mark,
Buh-Bye stupid.
I thought you were principled when you stood against the stimulus money.
Thanks for nothing turdburger.

I have lost faith in all government...just when I thought there were a few decent men left they pull this crap.
I feel if a person is unfaithful to their spouse what’s stopping them from being unfaithful to people he does not even know....FWIW.
FUWTBS!
Okay, Cheney is not *holding on to the spotlight* when he grants an interview with these talking-heads. But "old men"?? Sanford born in 1960, Rush born in 1951, hardly some enormous, generation gap there! A nine-year difference makes one a geezer, who knew??
“...but he is making it clear that he is going to try to muscle his way into the spotlight.”
I think his plan just succeeded.
Oh, he was trying to have some input down there south of the border.
parsy, who is not crying for you, South Carolina
As far as I am concerned Rush and Cheney have stood by the people of America.
When asked if Sanford's and Ensign's upfront role was good for the Republican Party? Let's just say with their deceit on "their state of affairs"... Probably.... No, definitely isnt!
Ensign and Sanford have let their Party down---in the limelight and they are that dumb????
Where is the leadership? {crickets}
“folks who have had more than their share of time at front row seat of the table” about Rush Limbaugh.
This guy was NEVER a conservative.
Rush Limbaugh wasn’t given a “share” of time to promote his opinion. Rush built a radio empire by making people want to tune in to listen to his opinion about the news of the day.
What a perverse and disgustingly liberal mindset.
We should all focus on the TAX and RATION disaster ...
The questions are not related to how long Rush and Cheney have been around. The questions are related to, “Are they relevent? Are they still at the top of their game? Do they still have something positive to add to the debate? Is our cause and the nation better off for them being in the spotlight?” The answers to these questions being yes, then Sanford’s opinion is quite misguided.
The problem with the Republican Party, is it does not more closely follow what Rush and Cheney have been saying.
Any Conservative cause that is going to dismiss Lambaugh, and certainly the comments of Cheney post holding office, is a cause lost in the wilderness.
Sanford, thanks but no thanks.
Better put some more air in those pontoons fella, you’re listing considerably.
When deciding whom to endow with the Public Trust, it is the first obligation of the voter/citizen to determine whether or not the candidate is TRUSTWORTHY. That is why all these stories about politicians who cheat on a spouse, male or female, are relevant and the public is entitled to know, even before they are elected, it is not some *family matter between me and my spouse and my God* that they all try to claim.
Dimwits are the only ones who can get away with having affairs, not that a person should be having them anyway, but the sheer stupidity of this is mind boggling.
It was a subliminal guilt-by-asssociation ploy whereby the fresh scandal rubs off on arch enemies just by the natural bubbling action of a babbling chorus of righteous rabble rousers among the MSM.
Sanford 2012 Presidential Bid: RIP
I will not vote for a RINO in 2012. Period!
