On Tuesdays Newsroom program, CNN correspondent Carol Costello harkened back to the 1970 incident at Kent State University, where National Guardsmen shot rock-throwing protesters and bystanders, and made it a possible equivalent to the recent murder of Iranian student Neda. Costello pondered the effect of the Neda murder video on the Iranian protests, and flashed a famous photo from the 1970 shootings [audio clips from the report are available here].
Anchor Kyra Phillips introduced the overall theme of Costellos report: By now, youve probably heard about Neda, the young Iranian woman that was gunned down in Tehran. Well, in death, shes become quite a symbol of countless Iranians demanding new elections. The question now: will the memory of Neda help make that happen? After giving some details into the college students death, the correspondent described the international reaction to it: It seems the whole world now knows Neda and aches for her- and why not? It watched her die.
Costello subsequently played a clip of Iranian author Azar Nafisis reaction to the Neda death video. She then proposed her question about the impact of the video: Its difficult to say right now, though, if this image of Neda will change everything. We know that pictures sometimes do. Many believe this shot taken at Kent State of a student gunned down after a Vietnam War protest helped end the war, yet this video of a lone student standing up to Chinese tanks did not end communism in China.

Make a comparison with the so-called Boston Massacre. Anti-Brit though I am, the soldiers were right and the dead were wrong, as proven by John Adams to the satisfaction of a Boston jury.
Those who want to cuddle the oh soooo romantic revolutionary wannabes of yesteryear only serve to encourage them and the cuddlers are no better than the cuddlees. If you want to enslave your descendants that will have to be your business. I won't sit by while you try to enslave mine.
If any descendant of mine behaves as those did at Kent State for similar reasons, and gets shot or killed in the process, I will miss them but not object. Likewise, if any descendant robs a bank or murders a neighbor or whatever. Marching on guardsmen whose rifles are drawn sent to guard the campus the day after a major anti-military arson has a name. It is not just the rank stupidity that is the very definition of leftist college trash, their professors and other instigators and agitators. It is suicide by guard. As to "innocent passersby," those who don't play in the highway have a better chance of not being hit by tractor trailers. As to the guard, it was not negligence but self-defense. Good for them.
When we need fraudulent “moral” advice from Iranian mullahs or phony “moral equivalency” from anyone, we will be sure to let them be the first to know. Meanwhile, they ought not hold their breath.
No tears for the girl shot dead walking from her dorm to her classroom? Was she a leftist or a spoiled brat?
It was a bad shoot.
They didn’t “march on the guardsmen”. It was a protest. The guard shot at unarmed protesters, same as the guys in Iran are doing. The shooting was investigated by a commission appointed by Nixon, here is what THEY found:
The President’s Commission on Campus Unrest avoided probing the question regarding why the shootings happened. Instead, it harshly criticized both the protesters and the Guardsmen, but it concluded that “the indiscriminate firing of rifles into a crowd of students and the deaths that followed were unnecessary, unwarranted, and inexcusable.”
2. They got some of what they deserved.
3. The commission appointed by Nixon was the usual gang of spineless unprincipled jerks that are appointed to all such commissions, respectable or semi-respectable windtunnels who live in pristine areas far from the action and send their kids to Harvard or Yale as legacies and not to Kent State or any place like it. Oh golly, Mergatroid, those awful barbarians in the Ohio National Guard actually SHOT college kids, kids just like our Muffy and our Skipper. Let's have a commission to play make-believe moralists for windtunnel college parents, comfort them and take Muffy and Skipper's side! Bilge.
4. Wasn't that commission chaired by William Scranton? Since when did he become respectable in conservative circles???
5. The commission and its "study" and its conclusions are what was unnecessary, unwarranted and inexcusable. See also the similarly spineless Kerner Commission cheerleading urban rioters as being right and the police wrong. Of course that was before Kerner became a federal convict and prisoner (I think those are constitutional qualifications for Illinois liberal governors Kerner, Lyin' Ryan, Blagojevich and Walkin' Dan Walker). But I digress.
6. Then there was the 9/11 commission featuring some of those who lowered our defenses (like Jamie Gorelick) as whitewas...err, commission members. Too bad Scranton, Kerner and Gorelick weren't in the crowd of other worthless trash shot at Kent State.
7. BTW, is that the same Nixon whose tapes indicate that he favored abortion being legal because it might be needed in case of interracial pregnancies?????
8. BTW again, Nixon discussed the use of the guard with Governor Rhodes the night before as the ROTC ruins were smoldering still and then proved his reputation by appointing the usual commission of "respectable" elitist moral quislings to kiss the patoots of revolutionary romantic wannabes and their equally vacant-headed parents. I want to see and hear the tape of the Nixon/Rhodes confab. Nixon has been dead for about 16 years and Rhodes longer. It is about time.
9. I note your reluctance to mention the felony arson that destroyed the Kent State ROTC building the previous night which is WHY the guard was called out.
We rightfully mourn the four dead in Ohio.
However, The SDS stirred up a hornets nest with their antics(cherry bombs and rushing the Nat’l guard) and as far as I’m concerned they have a lot of blood on their hands.
Sorry, you don’t shoot unarmed Americans no matter what you might believe.
Sorry, you dont shoot unarmed Americans no matter what you might believe.
The girl you describe should have taken the long way around as I am sure she would now agree in the unlikely event that she was "innocent" and not just nosy about the action or on her way to join the action. When people cause the guard to shoot, it is not the guard's fault that some passersby are jeopardized. First responsibility is that of the criminal protestors (marching on the guard is NOT free speech). Second is on the dimwits who are brainless enough and clueless enough to wander into the path of fire or even the potential path of fire.
It is certainly not the fault of guardsmen defending themselves. You can safely bet that salutes or cherry bombs were set off in the crowd. Marching against the guard is sufficient justification for firing against the mob.
This caterwauling over the shooting of about 17 people who mostly needed shooting and a few negligent dimwits among them is the kind of windtunnelism that has changed our rules of engagement in Afghanistan to make sure the soldiers understand that it is OK with O'B if our soldiers are shot from private homes but not OK if the soldiers defend themselves. Baloney in Afghanistan and baloney at Kent State.
Also note that Dubya conducted a long and controversial war in Iraq and in Afghanistan and that, remembering the wages of brainless leftist arson and threats to the guard at Kent State, the left somehow, this time, managed to control itself into NOT burning ROTC buildings and NOT marching on guardsmen. They have learned that the government is quite as capable of shooting little boodgeums times 17 as little boodgeums may deserve to get shot when insisting on suicide by guard. The alternative is anarchy, a goal of the radical left unless and until they are in charge. No tears now or ever. No change of mind now or ever, either.
One is a repressive Gov't lying every day about its right to rule.
One was a Gov't working for freedom against a global communist juggernaut to squelch freedom.
One you have the forces for freedom in the streets.
The other you have the forces for freedom in the White House who were coming in to squelch lawlessness.
As a lawyer (now recovering) I successfully litigated actual First Amendment Free Speech cases and Kent State was NOT a denial of Free Speech. It arose from an assault (Check Black's Law Dictionary/no contact necessary/threat sufficient) by the leftist trash as they marched against the guard. Shall the guard do as the leftists order them? Shall the guard turn their weapons over the the Ho Chi Minh love slaves who could turn the guard's weapons against the guard? At Kent State, the guard were the grownups and the punks got what they deserved. Or at least part of what they deserved.
Your tagline, in the context of your posts, is an affront to common sense.
Life is short. Obligations are many. I am going to cruise other threads but will return late tonight.
Your entire line of thinking indicates you think it is all right to kill unarmed people. Perhaps you should take a look at who sent those troops there, totally unprepared. The fact is that people were killed, just as in Iran.
As far as my tagline, you have no idea what you are talking about. I am as conservative as anyone — in fact I think the government sending troops to shoot its own citizens is an affront to the Constitution and the First Amendment.
A year or so after Kent State happened, I talked with a Marine EOD guy who help clean up the mess afterwards. He said they found 78 RPM records that had single-edged razor blazes taped to the edges. Some of those "protestors" skimmed them at the troops like Frizbees.
One of many flyers handed out before the shooting.
The campus ROTC building after the "innocent protestors" got done with it.
The famous picture with the 14-year-old-runaway-wannabe-revolutionary screaming "They're using REAL bullets!"
Honey, you play Revoltionary, you get treated as a revolutionary. Reality Bites.
At Kent State, the National Guardsman’s lives were threatened and they acted in self defense. Iran has no comparison whatsoever to Kent State.
B.S.
Kent State students were killed as a consequence of an ill-trained NatGuard officer in response to life threatening behavior of the students themselves over a period of time that weekend.
Neda was protesting for Liberty and Freedom of the Iranian people. Kent State students were protesting for the success of the Communists/Khmer Rouge and spread of communism.
The Kent State students' deaths were not in vain, unfortunately. Let's pray to God Neda's is not either. Kent State students brought their deaths upon themselves whereas Neda didn't.
