But let there be ONE WHIFF of a (possibly Democrat manufactured) Republican 'scandal', and FOOM, it's under the bus, guilty or not.

Sanford has always been a bit quirky - which is what I LIKE about him. Unfortunately, this doesn’t look good to a lot of people, and it figures it’s the one potential ‘08 candidate who was dead-set against the stimulus from the start who does this.
I guess we’ll find out...

The discussion doesn’t seem to have become more rational on this thread, people who know nothing are more than willing to share it. It is of course possible that Sanford was on vacation by himself, or even that he had a breakdown and left unannounced, this will “all come out in the wash” as my grandmother would say. If I were to hazard a guess (which is compatible with the wild speculation) I would say that he was on trade mission, he has done these before and the participants request that it be secret until things are finalized... then it will released.
It is also ridiculous to be playing rickashay rabbit about “presidential aspirations” with so much ahead of us before the presidential primaries are to take place. Maybe the reason the Democrats have been successful the last two elections is a lack of focus (by candidates or voters) on government that will promote freedom, prosperity and freedom. We should support efforts of politician who have that as their agenda and when it is time to choose presidential candidates base our decision on their performance, or we can “hoop and holler” and loose more of our fredom.
He has the absolute power to throw any “lies and distortions” directly under the bus. Today. Right now. Just come out and tell what happened. I believe most people here would be HAPPY to hear “the truth” directly from him. I’d love to hear a logical explanation for deciding at the stroke of the last second to “cruise” the coastline of Argentina. Alone. Without any contact. Without anyone knowing where he was. I wonder what kind of calamity could have happened. Not even to his state...but to his wife and children as THEY vacationed without him. Let him come out and put all this to rest. Has he yet?
Perhaps i am just more skeptical than you? As i said, i haven’t written him off, but this stunt didn’t do much to enhance his chances IMO. is it just those of us with children who find it particularly egregious that he was away from his kids on Father’s day? i see some deriding that as a silly concern, but it is the first thing that occurred to me when i heard he was gone. if his kids were adults it would matter less, but that isn’t the case here. these things DO matter to voters, and if one is to be pragmatic, one has to look at how things will be PERCEIVED regardless of one’s intentions. again, lack of political savvy on his part to not realize how it would be perceived, which is in itself a concern for a politician seeking higher ofc.
You and some of the rest need to settle down and let the facts come out. It is not the media’s fault that they have been given different stories.
He is the Governor of South Carolina and that is his obligation 24/7 and when he leaves the State, it is his obligation to name the Lt Governor acting not just leave without his security detail and not even hiw wife knowing where he is.
That is not someone who should be Governor — he swore an oath as Governor and being gone with his office even having different stories does not make a good Governor no matter how you slice it. His stand up against the stimulus was the right thing to do, but he lost with the Supreme Court. That’s the way Government works. I don’t care what he calls himself but he is listed as a Republican and we don’t need prima donna’s that feel that they can do whatever they want as elected officials — we have enough of those.
How do the facts not shine a good light on him? Let’s review those facts:
1. Sanford DID tell his staff and family where he was going.
2. Because he was traveling without a security detail, it was in his best interests that no one knew he was gone.
3. His political enemies — Republicans at that — ginned up the media story.
4. When confronted by a pestering media, things went downhill.
5. Again though, at all times there was no doubt that Sanford’s staff and family knew where he was.

Read the AP article and is apparent what is behind this. It talks of Sanford’s hike, Palin’s ethics problems, Perry’s secession comment. The media is tearing down the governors one by one to leave another McCain to challenge Obama. Hey, didn’t hear anything about Tim Pawlenty yet, hmmm wonder why?
I have a question. Who originally asked (publicly) where Gov. Sanford was?

Exactly. rather than media bias, i see it as a case of political naivete which we do not need in a candidate seeking higher ofc. if he can’t see that going solo/incognito is to hand a club with which to beat him over the head, then i am worried about his political instincts.
You have hit the real problem. Not being in contact with his family and especially his children on Father’s Day. They had no way to contact the man. Not to check in on Father’s Day is WRONG any way you slice. Sanford is the one responsible for the media interest and the new one that he was on a cruise? Give me a break!

When anything negative from the media comes out on respected Conservatives, the first question to ask is, “Where/what is the source ?” If we start to attack before knowing it, it doesn’t speak well to us. As I said, I’d hate to have a good number of people on this thread serving on a jury. They would’ve all shot first and asked questions later. I feel like I’m playing the role of Henry Fonda in “Twelve Angry Men.”

These are the facts I’ve seen reported:
1. His staff did not know his whereabouts.
2. His family did not know his whereabouts.
3. There was enough concern that they had to ping his cell phone which directed them to the Atlanta area.
4. His chief of staff got a call from him. Not the other way around. It was then that Sanford was told to get home.
So it sounds like the Republicans are going to throw him under the bus like they usually do to their own.
Exactly! He handed the club. It is not media bias when a Governor disappears and his wife, office (for several days), and State Police don’t know where he has gone. He did it to himself.
Would love to see their reaction if this was a RAT Governor.
No, I’m not going to apologize for it. Are you? I haven’t accused him of anything, I simply stated my opinion based on his invitation for people to speculate. It might be a good idea if he started telling the truth to his wife and family about his whereabouts when he disappears for a few days. Why should I apologize for his irresponsible actions?
You don’t know the truth, and that’s a fact. As despicable a pack of hyenas you and some others have behaved on here in taking the media at face value, I’d still defend you against charges as an officeholder until I knew exactly what happened. I’m sorry you wouldn’t do the same.
I’m not throwing him under any bus. At least not yet. If he chooses to let this “swirl of slander” continue without saying a word today to correct it all....then there’s a real problem IMO.
