SC: Gov. Sanford not heard from since Thursday (Updated)

UPDATE: The governor’s office issued a statement Monday afternoon: "Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside. We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements."

The whereabouts of Gov. Mark Sanford have been unknown to state officials since Thursday, and some state leaders are questioning who is in charge of the executive office.

Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division has been able to reach Sanford, who left the mansion in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation who declined to be identified.

Sanford’s last known whereabouts were near Atlanta, where a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said.

One official familiar with the situation said there is no indication that foul play is involved.

. . . . .

First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press her husband has been gone for several days and she doesn't know where. She said she was not concerned. Jenny Sanford said the governor said he needed time away from their children to write something.

One thing for sure, this forum is not like it used to be.

No kidding! Once again we are losing good people and this is the reason why. We keep going through these phases, especially after elections with lots of idiotic statements with no thought or knowledge behind them.

Oddly enough some of these folks have sign on dates years old yet behave like they just got here. I wonder if they are worried about Sanford perhaps running against one of their candidates in 2012. That or they are DU plants. I don’t recall ever having as many ill informed folks as we have now.

Good grief, how many times do we have to state it. HIS OFFICE KNOWS WHERE HE IS.

Best day of my life was when my kid called from Basic Training.... in the middle of a business meeting.

I took the call, because it had to be important. And it was. Kid scored expert with grenades and was allowed to call me to report it.

That whispered "Thanks, dad" was the assurance that my love and effort for my children was not wasted, and was appreciated.

Beats the hell out of all the manufactured greeting card holidays.

Our governor is out hiking and these people on this thread trash him for no reason. They are a disgrace to FR.

Thanks. The posters here don’t want to know the truth, they rather enjoy bashing our governor. I think FReepers have been taken over by DU pods.

This guy has been one of the few genuine Republicans on the national scene. I hope he is either in a planning session to politically overthrow the statists who have seized control of this nation or taking a sabatical to get his thoughts straight.

You raised a fine young and brave man, J. I thank you and him from me and mine. Sounds like every day is Father’s Day in your household. Thanks for watching over US/us.

SLED is South Carolina’s version of what many states call the State Bureau of Investigation. It is State Law Enforcement Division.

I’ve always liked him when hearing/seeing him on various programs. However, this is bizarre behavior and will no doubt seriously damage any hopes he has of higher national office.

It was on ABC World News tonight and they made it seem as though he was mentally ill or doing something illegal. To the casual viewer, it is a major turn-off and just doesn’t seem right.

Have no idea what the REAL story is, but IMO he just killed any chance of national office by “hiking” or whatever he says he is doing. Not a smart move.

What a bizarre thread.

The man has been BATTLING for us and needs some time to regroup. Big freaking deal.

I ask this purely out of curiousity. In South Carolina does everyone have standing to institute a search for an adult on a whim.

Where I live I couldn’t get police interest up for a missing family member, 18 yo and up unless there was an eyewitness to an abducttion or physical evidence tending to point to a crime.

And I doubt that a non relative, say employer, could get more than a courtesy drive-by, which would only result in “They doing just fine, period”.

Just askin’.

Maybe, but with the media's habit of changing words, we really have no idea what she said to them. And the article to me, looks like the press person added the On Fathers Day part.

That sounds plausible. Is the SC National Guard deployed at present?

A few years back I remember when Cheney visited some South Pacific nations. One Freeper was hysterical because Cheney's plane was reported to be in an unscheduled place that the person thought was out of place for a return trip to DC. The Poster yammered on posting almost hysterically for nearly a whole day about the missing Cheney a if alliens had taken him up. Turns out he was headed for Iraq and the government didn't inform that Freeper of his every move. The unannounced ahead of time out of route stop the press picked up on was obviously for fuel.

A man deer hunting in the winter or trout fishing in the summer can be difficult to reach even though several may be privy to the general area. Two-three hours from Atlanta driving can put a person into such areas. Being in a state vehicle though he can likely be reached and have access to Emerengency Management Communications in an instant.

Our governments are set up to function with or without any one person being present.

I know, talk about jumping the gun!

For heaven’s sake, give the guy a break, he does the right thing to unwind, unlike most in WA!

OMG...ABC ran a hit story on him. Yeah, you are right. He’s done.

Whatever.

Reagan was prounouced senile and somehow managed two terms. I’d like to hear one Freeper explain to me what fairytale world you live in where any republican be it conservative or liberal runs for President of ther United States and emerges without a twisted profile presented by the media and their political enemies?

According to some here Palin’s out. Jindal’s out. Sanford’s out. Huh. Imagine that. The three considered most conservative in the race. Must be coincidence.
