Fondly, Greenland Loosens Danish Rule
New York Times ^ | June 21, 2009 | SARAH LYALL

Greenland, with 58,000 people and only two traffic lights, both of them here in the capital, is now securing its place in the world. On Sunday, amid solemn ceremony and giddy celebration, it ushered in a new era of self-governance that sets the stage for eventual independence from Denmark, its ruler since 1721.

The move, which allows Greenland to gradually take responsibility over areas like criminal justice and oil exploration, follows a referendum last year in which 76 percent of voters said they wanted self-rule. Many of the changes are deeply symbolic. Kalaallisut, a traditional Inuit dialect, is now the country’s official language, and Greenlanders are now recognized under international law as a separate people from Danes.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, wearing a traditional Inuit costume with shorts made of seal fur and a short, beaded shawl, solemnly handed over the official self-government document to the chairman of Greenland’s Parliament.

Is that like Pelosi wearing the headscarf in the ME?

Seal fur shorts? Gotta love those indigenous peoples’ customs, especially when they’re sure to put a burr under PETA’s saddle.

Meanwhile, global warming is rapidly melting the mighty icecap that covers some 80 percent of Greenland’s 840,000 square miles.

They had to mention the scam of course. Global warming would be a great thing for that place!

>> Is that like Pelosi wearing the headscarf in the ME? <<

If you’re referring to the shawl, I’d say the comparison is apt.

On the other hand, a putative image of Pelosi in fur-seal shorts is too horrible for even a few seconds’ contemplation!

Greenland loses Danish roll? Oh the horror of it.

Danish rolls are my favorite breakfast, lunch and dinner.

They had better find those rolls fast before they get spoiled.

I had a great cherry danish the other day. Fresh, tasty, and big.

What? This is about Greenland loosening its ties to Denmark, no Danish rolls?

Sorry!

Left Wing Religionist of Global warming are lying. Greenland will remain one heck of an ice heap. I will continue flying my ski-equipped aircraft there until I retire and until this world passes away it will be there.

I resent you Al Gore, I also resent every left wing religionist in this fake craze of yours. I lay it all at your feet. You deserve it.

Denmark's Queen Margrethe (C) and her husband, Prince Henrik, attend the ceremonies to celebrate the new era of self rule of Greenland in Nuuk. Inuit choirs gathered around the port of Greenland's capital sang traditional songs Sunday to welcome a new era of self rule after 300 years under Danish authority. (AFP/SCANPIX/Keld Navntoft)

The new name was proposed by a "Three Stooges" fan, who wanted Nuuk-nuuk-nuuk but had to settle for the shorter form.

Just wait until New Zealand decides to make the Maori names mandatory--Aotearoa for New Zealand, and Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara for Wellington.
