Possible explosives found at Love Field Dallas

Just reported. No link yet. My son told me a friend of his was at Love Field when it happened and a security person told him that they had found explosives. There were police everywhere according to my son's friend and the airport traffic was shut down.

The news is reporting that a security dog hit on an unattended package but the authorities are not releasing any info yet on whether or not is was explosives.

DALLAS - Flights resumed at Love Field Airport after an unattended bag was removed and found to not be an explosive Sunday.

All flights were placed on hold and an area of the airport evacuated after a "suspicious" bag was discovered unattended in the upper level baggage claim of the airport. The explosive ordinance unit was called to the scene.

Flights were on hold for nearly two hours; they resumed at about 5:20 p.m.

They do it all the time. A lot of times it's stuff that the person thought would fit in the bins or under the seat, but would not. Other times its a largish "carry on", that the person would rather check on the jetway, usually at a door leading to steps down to the tarmac, right before you get to the aircraft hatch. Also fairly often it's things like strollers, car seats, and other such "baby stuff".

What is a pitot tube? Just curious.

As the other poster told you, it's a device for measuring airspeed. It works by measuring the difference between the stagnation pressure and the "flow" pressure. It's just a pointy tube with two tubes inside. One leads to a hole at the tip, pointing in the direction of flight (more or less) the other pointing perpendicular to that. Some have just the hole in the tip and they get their static pressue from elsewhere on the aircraft. In one case the airflow is stopped at the pressure device, that's the one that measures stagnation pressure, the other one has the air blowing across it rather than into it. That one is measuring the static pressure.

If one handles fireworks or ammunition or gun re-loading equipment, and then touches other things (such as a package or suitcase, etc), then the "explosive" sniffing dog will detect even just a tiny bit of gunpowder or whatever...

I think this is more likely than firecrackers in a suitcase...

With the ammunition shortage, the poor guy might have been reloading some shells...

I disagree... Bloodhounds can follow a trail of only a few molecules. If this was just a trace of "fireworks" or something else (like chemicals from a gun re-loader such as gunpowder or other things used for ammunition), the dog is doing an excellent job...

I still think there was something that triggered the re-action by the dog, and the dog is to be thanked for finding such small amounts of "whatever".
